#TriviaSunday In powerful thunderstorm systems, we often get a feature called a Gust Front. This is different from your regular frontal boundaries (caused by different airmass temperatures) that cause clouding and rain. A #GustFront is the leading edge of the powerful downdraft from the TS system, which causes squally winds ahead of an approaching TS. It is this front that can pick up dust, causing dust storms that can travel long distances. Very rarely, they can whip up so much dust that they're visible in satellite imagery as a ring of dust spreading out from the thunderstorm system. A very good example is the dust storm we saw in MMR on Friday!
