#HTBtCotton The government’s move to introduce Herbicide Tolerant (HT) cotton—built on the already failing Bt technology—flies in the face of expert advice and hard evidence. On Prof. M.S. Swaminathan’s centenary, it is worth recalling that the 2004 Task Force on Application of Biotechnology in Agriculture he chaired explicitly warned against HT crops in India, citing their labour‑displacing nature and the risks they pose to rural livelihoods, biodiversity, and traditional mixed‑cropping systems. These warnings have been repeatedly reinforced by Parliamentary Committees and the Supreme Court‑appointed Technical Expert Committee. Yet, pressure from multinational pesticide firms—losing herbicide markets in developed nations—now appears to be driving decisions here. HT cotton will sharply increase the use of glyphosate—a herbicide banned or restricted in many countries for its proven links to cancer (notably non‑Hodgkin lymphoma), organ damage, endocrine and neurological disorders, and its ecological harm, including soil degradation, water contamination, and biodiversity loss. Approving a seed whose sole purpose is to promote the use of such a toxic chemical is not just bad policy—it is a direct threat to public health, farmer livelihoods, and ecological integrity. #GMCrops #MSSwaminathan https://t.co/7KOxvUpk8D
