The government’s move to introduce Herbicide Tolerant (HT) cotton—built on the already failing Bt technology—flies in the face of expert advice and hard evidence. On Prof. M.S. Swaminathan’s centenary, it is worth recalling that the 2004 Task Force on Application of Biotechnology in Agriculture he chaired explicitly warned against HT crops in India, citing their labour‑displacing nature and the risks they pose to rural livelihoods, biodiversity, and traditional mixed‑cropping systems.
These warnings have been repeatedly reinforced by Parliamentary Committees and the Supreme Court‑appointed Technical Expert Committee. Yet, pressure from multinational pesticide firms—losing herbicide markets in developed nations—now appears to be driving decisions here.
HT cotton will sharply increase the use of glyphosate—a herbicide banned or restricted in many countries for its proven links to cancer (notably non‑Hodgkin lymphoma), organ damage, endocrine and neurological disorders, and its ecological harm, including soil degradation, water contamination, and biodiversity loss.
Approving a seed whose sole purpose is to promote the use of such a toxic chemical is not just bad policy—it is a direct threat to public health, farmer livelihoods, and ecological integrity. #GMCrops #MSSwaminathan

Despite the stern warning about #Glyphosate health impact, a committee is seeking approval for herbicide tolerant #HtBtCotton. All members of the committee should be held accountable for any future health and environment damage that the society will face. https://t.co/LvJeI4LTj3
Before a hig-level interaction takes a call on #HtBtcotton will someone hold the GM industry and alconcerned agricultural institutes/universities responsible for the failure of #Btcotton leading to the collapse of cotton in Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan?
Why create a facade of a high-level cotton meeting when the real intent is to approve the illegally cultivated #HtBtcotton, asks farmer leader #Jawandhia. Just like groundwater mining in paddy, who will be held accountable for herbicide contamination in the years to come?
#BQOpinion | Mahyco has resubmitted its application for approval of #HTBtCotton in 'good faith.'
But HTBt cotton continues to be marred with litigation, regulatory uncertainty, and illegality, writes @VVNFernandes.

Little has changed since 2016 when @MahycoGrow withdrew application for approval of #HTBtCotton citing IP issues. Six years later, it has reapplied "in good faith," and for technology stewardship. @AllianceAgri @BiotechCentre @AgBioWorld @smartindianagri

And, #India doesn't allow herbicide-tolerant GM crops. Citing this reason, no rules or regulation on intensive application of #Glyphosate on illegal #HTBtcotton and other crops for the past more than 5 years. We need #Herbicide focussed #legal system.
