@KatyElphinstone Great question. I'm #HighMasking thanks to conversion therapy aka ABA so nothing I say or do around others comes naturally, there's a lot of smile & wave. Only in great distress or anger I cannot mask and speak my mind. Masking is highly internalised in my case. It's a curse.

@AutisticCoach_ I'm #HighMasking. It's internalised neuronormative behaviour. I'm practically unable to unmask in social situations, even if I want to I couldn't. Masking causes utter exhaustion.

@Irl_Andr01d To me it often happens delayed, the overload effect kicks in when I'm back in a safe space. In my case it might have to do that I'm #HighMasking I was forcibly trained to endure sensory overload in childhood.

My wife is very much neurodivergent and she is a veterinarian. Right through her career she has had colleagues assume a great many things about her that are completely different wrong. My wife says very little and does not engage in conflict often. Today she had a colleague /
@Always_Autistic I'm #HighMasking & I understand your question. I was forced to mask as kid in coercion to neuronormativity, and I internalised it to a degree that it's very difficult to unmask. I don't feel like a liar, but I feel like I missed an authentic life though.

@ashleyann_atx I don't feel like it, but was told that I can be intimidating. I think it's the "otherness" that shines through though I'm #HighMasking - I don't come over 100% natural allistic. My eye contact tends to be too intense, my words too adamant etc for allistics' taste.
@PaulA_Projekt How often did I say "It's okay" though I felt more or less vaguely uncomfortable with a situation? And I am #ActuallyAutistic. But that's internalised #HighMasking & the result of being pestered into compliance aka brainwashing called ABA I experienced in early childhood.
