Shri Saptakoteeshwar was the royal deity of the Kadamba dynasty that ruled over Goa till the 13th century. In 14th century, Islamic invaders desecrated the Saptakoteeshwar shrine in Govapuri, the ancient capital of the Kadambas. However, Barely a decade later, in 1367 CE, the legendary Vijayanagara general Madhava Mantri rebuilt the temple on Divar island. In 1540. The Portuguese destroyed the Saptakoteehwar temple at Divar, razed it to the ground and the sacred Lingam was taken out and fixed at the base of a well to humiliate Hindus. Braving persecution, some Hindu Gaonkars of Bicholim rescued the Linga in secret. They carried Him across the Mandovi to a village called Narve. And waited. And then HE came. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. In 1668, he ordered the temple rebuilt in Narve and himself did the Bhoomipuja. The #Saptakoteeshwar temple stands in Narve even today. This isn’t just a temple. This is Goa’s ancient and eternal Dharmic soul, built in laterite. Walk the stone path around it barefoot, and you’ll feel it. Not just the coolness of laterite—but the chill of centuries of struggle. A quiet rage. A proud resilience. This is not the Goa of beer bottles and beach shacks.
