For the brother whose December heartbeat fit perfectly beside my April one —
two years apart, but somehow always the same age where it mattered.

Some little girls asked for ponies.
Some asked for tiaras.
I asked for a real, live baby I could love
with all the oversized devotion
God mistakenly put into a toddler.
And in December 1982 —
two Aprils after I arrived —
God handed me the boy
who would become my shadow, my sidekick, my built-in best friend.
His name was James Earl Andrew Hodge.
Andy.
December-born.
Soft as a marshmallow.
Smelled like heaven and baby powder.
And immediately — without question —
my person.
He stayed in the hospital a little longer because of a rare blood type,
but I treated that like bonus prep time:
At age 2 (me):
packed a diaper bag
built a shoebox crib
crushed a graham cracker “in case he got snacky”
picked out a lawn chair for our world-saving meetings
I wasn’t practicing being a mommy.
I was practicing being his big sister —
the one job I would never resign from.
And when he came home,
wrapped like a burrito, soft as a cloud…
I reached out with my jellybean fingers,
ready to claim my destiny—
And the adults ruined EVERYTHING.
“ELLIE SIT DOWN!”
“YOU NEED HELP!”
“DON’T TOUCH THE BABY!”
My shoebox crib sat empty.
My bologna sandwich dried out.
My heart cracked like a dropped cookie.
But toddlers don’t give up.
Especially not April-born toddlers
armed with snacks and ambition.
So every time Mama turned her back—
Operation Andy Doll launched.
“Elena Nell… you better not be touching that baby!”
Too late.
There he was in the doll stroller —
head flopped, blanket slipping, sock missing —
looking at me like:
“Well… I guess we’re doing this.”
And in that moment,
something stitched itself into my heart
that never came undone.
I wasn’t holding a toy.
I was holding the person God made for my life.

Ages 4 and 2
We were chaos.
Snack thieves.
Mud puddle philosophers.
I spoke for both of us because he was shy —
and he accepted this like it was the natural order of things.
Ages 7 and 5
We rode bikes like we owned the street.
I made the rules.
He broke them.
Then we both lied about it with matching guilty faces.
Ages 10 and 8
We shared secrets no one else got to hear —
kid-sized worries, crushes, fears, dreams.
He trusted me with all of it
because brothers know which sister is the safe place.
Ages 16 and 14
I drove.
He critiqued my driving.
We argued about music.
He always won
because I secretly liked his songs better.
Ages “grown-up but still kids”
We laughed at things only WE understood.
Words we mispronounced as toddlers,
jokes built across years,
the kind of shared history
that belongs to siblings who grew up elbow-to-elbow.
Our birthdays were two years apart — April and December —
but emotionally?
We grew up at the same speed,
in the same world,
carrying the same childish magic
into adulthood without meaning to.
We weren’t twins,
but we acted like God almost made us that way
and then changed His mind at the last second.

And now?
Now remembering him is its own universe:
Some days warm —
like sunlight through a childhood curtain.
Some days sharp —
like stepping on a Lego barefoot
in the dark hallway of grief.
Some days I laugh remembering us,
and then cry remembering
that I don’t get to laugh with him anymore.
Because sibling grief?
It isn’t one loss.
It’s a thousand tiny losses
across every age you ever were together.
I held him at age 2.
Pulled him in a stroller at 4.
Raced him on bikes at 7.
Argued with him at 14.
Depended on him at 25.
Loved him at every version of myself.
So when he left,
every age of me broke at once.
The 2-year-old.
The 7-year-old.
The 14-year-old.
The grown woman.
All of us grieving
the December boy
who grew beside my April heart
every step of my life.

People ask how I go on.
But we both know the truth:
I don’t go on without him.
I go on with him.
In my ribs.
In every breath I drag through the ache.
In every fight I take on
because he should still be here to take it with me.
And somewhere above us,
he’s nudging God like:
“That’s my sister.
From the shoebox crib to right now —
she’s still carrying both our lives.”
And I am.
I carry the shoebox.
I carry the bologna sandwich.
I carry every age we ever were.
I carry every memory, every inside joke, every shared silence.
I carry the brother
whose heartbeat lived next to mine
even when the calendar said we were born two years apart.
Happy Birthday, my December boy.
My lifelong friend.
My favorite co-story.
My forever companion in every age of me.
I miss you until it hurts.
I love you until it echoes.
And I will carry us
for the rest of my life."
