It's not always clear to those new to therapy as to #howtherapyworks. A short piece is up on our website today briefly explaining and we've included a few experiences from those who have found therapy life changing. #cityroadtherapy https://t.co/VieZKA3W5s
This is a great explanation of one example of how to treat the “why” behind schemas. Thanks @AltOptionsCC #howtherapyworks #MentalHealthAwareness #psychotherapy
It is very important to heal your inner child. When growing up and you deal with difficult life experiences they influence the schemas that you hold in your mind. So when current situations occur the lens that we use is from the schemas that we developed due to our past.
@PsychToday In terms of integrating different approaches to psychotherapy, it is therefore natural and vital that the humanistic person-centered therapeutic alliance is foundational to most approaches to therapy, including mainstream cognitive-behavioral and psychodynamic. #Howtherapyworks
Therapist's role is to instill hope for change. While a non-judemental, empathetic, compassionate & reflective approach are ubiquitous elements of the relationship, therapist's orientation is unique that acts as a tool to facilitate change #psychotherapy #howtherapyworks
Although most will agree that the relationship in #psychotherapy is important, the question is:
How does it contributes to change?
Does its role in the change process vary according to the therapist's orientation?

Lots of dissertations are possible to answer the important question
"On what can #psychotherapy clinicians & researchers agree about #howtherapyworks
Would be a major contribution in developing an agreed-upon core/consensus

I see a nice dissertation here.
Mindset of change is an important part of #psychotherapy. Yet it can be overwhelming. Familiarity even undesirable can be comforting. Approaching with clients what parts of self to preserve & what to change in process helps them feel less intimated about change #howtherapyworks
Regardless of school of #psychotherapy, pt needs to have the mindset that change is possible
It is a common principle of change
Question: Can most clinicians and researchers agree this is important to #howtherapyworks
@SCPdiv12 @psychotherapy29 @ABCTNOW
Unrealistic to stop the proliferation of schools of #psychotherapy
The personal (identity), social (what conferences to attend) & economic (referrals) are powerful incentives
What we CAN do is spell out common principles/processes re #howtherapyworks

100+ year-old #psychotherapy has yet to have achieved an agreed-upon core. Why this is & thoughts on moving forward is in an America Psychologist article “Obtaining Consensus in Psychotherapy: What Holds Us back?”

Great to see us finally addressing the key question that can move #psychotherapy in the direction of specifying #howtherapyworks and finally obtaining an agreed-upon core.
Many other ingredients help make #psychotherapy work:
1)Hope
2)insight
3)Learning new coping skills
4)Identifying self-destructive patterns
5)Corrective emotional experience
6lGaining greater interpersonal flexibility
7)Existential/spiritual awakening
8)Identification w therapist
Warms my heart that @paytonjjones & @OlinoTom dealing with the issue #howtherapyworks
#psychotherapy will only arrive at an agreed-upon core/consensus when we work toward answering the question "On what can we agree?"
@OlinoTom @SolomonKurz @GoldfriedMarvin Conceptually I see the similarity. But I think there is a big difference in the amount of evidence we have that each type works. It's possible that corrective information more quickly modifies fear compared to other (perhaps more complex) emotions.
#psychotherapy cannot achieve agreed-upon core/consensus about #howtherapyworks if we worship the new & forget about past clinical & research contributions.
"New" is not always "improved"
"New waves" can wash away past contributions
@ABCTNOW @SCPdiv12
It sure is. This shows how the interpersonal therapeutic alliance, as derived from key humanistic principles, can be integrated across psychotherapies, on top of which interventions can be added. It is a core part of a broad consensus around #howtherapyworks.
Sounds like good CBT and psychodynamic therapy!
@GoldfriedMarvin @SCPdiv12 How about we ask “how do different therapies work for different people?” #howtherapyworks #psychotherapy
After #psychotherapy being in existence for more than 100 years, time to find an agreed-upon core/consensus
The question needs to be:
On what can researchers and therapists of different schools agree regarding #howtherapyworks?
PLS RT
La alianza terapéutica puede ser un potente facilitador del cambio en la TCC para el TAG. La relación mejora la evolución con independencia de la rigurosidad con la que los clínicos se adhieren al protocolo de tratamiento. #CBTWorks #HowTherapyWorks

Had lunch with former student Louis Castonguay, who is doing impressive work to close #psychotherapy clinical-research gap & also specify evidence-based principles of #howtherapyworks

I believe there is much in the psychodynamic model of teaching, training, treating and supervising that offers so much of what is considered #howtherapyworks. @JonathanShedler recently posted a video on this.
Have changed my Stony Brook grad #psychotherapy course. Spend less time on RCT Tx packages for DSM categories & more on #howtherapyworks: process, mediators, moderators, case formulation, etc
The 1st addresses WHO is right & the 2nd WHAT is right

I have no doubt that this is the future of #psychotherapy research and practice
The key question is: How far or near in the future will the zeitgeist shift away from therapy schools & move toward #howtherapyworks?
It's up to us!
