We were slowly cooling at the end of an #interglacial by #Milankovitch cycles, cooling faster since then towards a max glacial, pdf, https://t.co/TkjuCgPD1r
#Iceages didn't happen until:
¹ #Antarctica flew off to open the #SouthernOcean
² India leafed its way into Asia like cards to raise the #Himalaya from the #Eocene on removed most of the #CO2 by #rock_erosion
³ The #IsthmusOfPanama filled in from #volcanics cut off flow E.Pacific to Atlantic a biggie created the #GulfStream for Europe
Early cycles equal 41ky #LatePliocene [1ky=1000y], Sahara wet/dry cycles fit 2 into 1 of these, then way variable cycle to end 100yrs past 800ky avg 185ppm-215ppm min-to-max
Max CO2 305±5ppm prior to KingCoal we 🐝 at 427ppm times 1.7-aggi for all #greenhouse #gases is 727ppm CO2eqv #pliocene values #sealevel rise >40m/130ft higher #sportsfans what are the odds it won't ?
I'll ask @deepseek_ai ... lol ...

@bryan_johnson You conveniently sidestepped the fact that we evolved eating primarily ruminant (red) meat. This is supported by science - stable isotope testing of human fossil long bones + a consensus in paleoanthropology. We've been cooking meat for at least 1 million years as well. #iceages

Milankovitch Cycles are useful observations in the world of planetary orbital mechanics. We know there have been a number of Ice Ages on Earth because geologists and archeologists have confirmed them deep in the geologic record.
But how, exactly, do Ice Ages begin? The short answer is: we don't know, but we have a few clues, beginning with Earth's orbit around the Sun.
Milankovitch Cycles were published in book form in 1941. They argue that glaciation on earth is a long, slow process that can be largely explained by: 1) earth's slightly variable orbit around the sun (eccentricity), 2) a slight tilt on the earth's own axis (obliquity), and 3) a slight wobble (precession).
Each of those three orbital peculiarities, Milankovitch believed, caused temperature fluctuations on Earth that gradually caused temperature extremes.
Milankovitch Cycles actually help explain Ice Ages to some extent, but they do not work well enough to explain everything: certainly not today's unusual warming trend, and perhaps NONE of the numerous and relatively minor cooling and warming periods of the past.
We now have satellites capable of looking into aspects of planetary heating and cooling that neither Milankovitch nor any of his fellow pioneers and predecessors could have imagined. The CERES satellite system, for example, has been monitoring the amount of solar energy that enters, leaves, and sticks around within the Earth's atmosphere for more than two decades.
As a monitoring system, CERES attempts to measure: 1) the amount of solar energy that strikes the earth, 2) the amount of that energy that is reflected back to space before it has a chance to warm the planet, and 3) a long list of other indicators.
Thanks to CERES and similar efforts worldwide, we now KNOW there has been a net surplus of solar energy just "hanging around" in the atmosphere, in the oceans, and on earth's surfaces for the past twenty years or so.
Three potential explanations for the additional net energy on earth: 1) the sun has been burning hotter; 2) less energy is being reflected back to space; 3) vehicular traffic between earth's surface and space was never a factor until the 1960s.
Only one of those possibilities has been eliminated to the satisfaction of most of those who study and write on atmospheric issues: Father Sol (no denomination) is not currently burning hotter. That is, no one should feel the need to call their utility company to repair that bright light 93 million miles away.
NASA's CERES effort is briefly explained in the second attachment.
At this point, CERES has helped confirm that the earth as a whole is reflecting LESS of earth's total solar energy back into space than it was 20 years ago.
Why? A simplistic explanation is that there are fewer clouds now. But the followup question is: Why are there fewer clouds? No one seems to have an answer yet.
While the cloud deficit is good to know, it may also be a red herring. Overall, the earth's atmosphere appears to have begun heating shortly after the close of World War II. Why? Perhaps because WWII was at the cusp of "The Space Age". But there are other possibilities.
Could the space age help explain fewer clouds? Perhaps. Perhaps not.
Regardless of what may lie ahead in the global warming saga, @MatthewWielicki provides important insights. (First attachment)

Dr. Enzmann translated ice age inscriptions. Thousands of them. This is a good example - the yellow shape labeled #16 is a female. This shape shows up in almost every inscription there is.
