The Pentagon has confirmed 1,500 sailors, families, and pets have been relocated from Naval Support Activity (NSA) Bahrain to Norfolk Naval Base in Virginia.
NSA Bahrain is (was) the headquarters of the U.S. 5th Fleet. It was struck multiple times on 28 February, the opening day of Operation Epic Fury, and several times afterwards. Satellite imagery confirmed at least seven structures destroyed in the first week alone, including communications infrastructure and warehouses.
Sailors are arriving in Norfolk with what fit in a backpack. Community groups were called in to provide basic toiletries.

Clearly there were members of Cabinet who were aware of the utmost secrecy demanded, but had no knowledge as to the reasons why.
Looking back to 1996, and some of the history surrounding an agreement for a "Joint space research facility" near Alice Springs... now known as Pine Gap (#JDFPG).
Built by United States on Australian soil, with agreement from the-then Australian Government.

Can these seperate assets such as satellites, P8-A Poseidon, or a shadowing submarine using ‘electronic surveillance measures’ collect VHF from a surface ship, and at what distances? Thanks.

The Defence Minister’s comment implies that @ASDGovAu did not inform the minister’s office — nor CDF, nor any civilian authorities — of its Signals Intelligence intercepts (and those by its US partner @NSAGov) that undoubtedly detected the Chinese Navy announcement they would be doing some live-firing.
If it’s true the Minister wasn’t told — and nor were the CDF, nor civil aviation authorities — the public needs to know whether this was a fowl-up, or whether it was intentional?

About 400 Australians presently work mainly on behalf of the USA at the Pine Gap #JDFPG satellite surveillance base, code named Rainfall - it was surely a hard rain that fell on those kids a week ago in Kabul.
