One year ago, colleagues and I watched in horror as Israeli security forces launched a massive operation in #JeninCamp on 21 January 2025. Little did we know that this was to become the longest, largest-scale operation in the #WestBank in decades. Twelve months later, operation ‘Iron Wall’ has not ceased, with some 33,000 Palestine refugees remaining forcibly displaced.
The camps in the northern West Bank I so often visited are no longer recognisable. Jenin, Tulkarm, and Nur Shams camps have been fully depopulated, after months of militarised activity and large-scale demolitions designed to end their very existence.
@UNRWA was created by the #UNGA to serve and protect Palestine refugees. Our mandate was renewed just last month with an overwhelming majority. However, just two days ago, the UNRWA compound in #EastJerusalem was razed to the ground, not dissimilar to what has happened to camps in the northern West Bank.
Both remind us that the international community has been failing #PalestineRefugees.
Hope is a rare commodity in the West Bank these days. By refusing to surrender our mandate and by keeping our healthcare and education services running, #UNRWAworks every day to uphold the rights and dignity of Palestine refugees.

This week, our long-term partner @eu_echo joined us in Jenin to hear about the protection environment and meet with forcibly displaced families. #JeninCamp is among the camps most affected by violence in the #WestBank, now completely emptied of its population and with significant infrastructure destruction.
@UNRWA has continued to support #PalestineRefugees forcibly displaced from the camp with education, health, and other critical services. UNRWA with support from @eu_echo is providing cash-for-rent for vulnerable families in the northern West Bank to help meet their basic needs.
Residents of Jenin Camp must be allowed to return to their homes. UNRWA stands ready to resume its services in accordance with its mandate. #UNRWAworks

Behind every demolished house in the #WestBank is a person, a family, a history. A compelling @dwnews report on Palestinian women who were finally able to return to #JeninCamp for the first time in six months to check on their homes. They found scenes that brought them to tears.
#JeninCamp has endured continuous destruction of civilian infrastructure, including homes, since July 2023, with many families already repeatedly displaced by these militarised operations. The mass demolitions conducted as part of Israeli Security Forces operation ‘Iron Wall’ have taken this destruction to a new level.
What we are witnessing in the northern camps is not just destruction, it is the systematic erasure of entire refugee communities and their collective memory. The very presence of @UNRWA to serve these #PalestineRefugees is being challenged.
Such demolitions are illegal, constitute a form of collective punishment, and serve no immediate security purpose. They need to be stopped.

Today the Israeli Security Forces opened fire on a diplomatic delegation in the vicinity of #JeninCamp during an official visit hosted by the @pmofa. The @UNRWA colleagues who were present are safe and accounted for.
This incident is a stark reminder of the lax use of excessive force routinely deployed by Israeli Security Forces in the #WestBank, often with lethal consequences. While the West Bank is not a war zone, so far this year 137 Palestinians have been killed in occupation-related violence.
The IDF has said they are investigating the incident. However, claims such as “mistakenly identifying [the delegation] as a threat” and firing “warning shots” do not fully capture the severity of today's events. This raises serious concerns over the way rules of engagement are applied to unarmed civilians.
Access to Jenin Camp has been near-impossible since the Israeli Security Forces operation ‘Iron Wall’ commenced on 21 January 2025. The Media Committee in Jenin camp reports that the Israeli occupation has completely destroyed around 600 homes in Jenin camp.
Additionally, 3,250 housing units have become uninhabitable due to destruction and fire during the ongoing assault, alongside widespread damage to streets and infrastructure.
While the world focuses on Gaza, the occupied #WestBank faces unprecedented violence, displacement & rising humanitarian needs.

“Today marks 60 days since the Israeli Forces launched operation ‘Iron Wall’ in #Jenin Camp – by far the longest and most destructive operation in the occupied West Bank since the second intifada in the 2000’s.
Tens of thousands of residents from Jenin, Tulkarm, Nur Shams, and El Far’a refugee camps have been displaced, with uncertain prospects for return amid statements from the Israeli Forces on their intentions to stay in the area for the foreseeable future.
The ongoing Israeli Forces operations has caused systematic destruction of civilian infrastructure and homes, aiming to permanently change the character of Palestinian cities and refugee camps at a scale unjustifiable by any purported military or law enforcement aims.
Just this week, the Israeli authorities issued demolition orders for another 66 buildings in Jenin Camp, on top of dozens of houses already destroyed there by the Israeli Forces.
Such large-scale, militarized operations cannot become the new norm in the West Bank. This trend of escalating violence – which started even before 7 October 2023 – must be reversed.
Several red lines have already been crossed, violating principles of international law that always emphasise the protection of civilians, civilian infrastructure, and private property including homes.
UNRWA teams are supporting displaced communities with emergency assistance. Families must be able to return to their homes, and UNRWA services in the camp restored including education and healthcare.”
