The US and Iran clashed at the UN Security Council Tuesday over conditions for reviving nuclear talks. Washington says it's open to direct negotiations, but only if Tehran accepts zero uranium enrichment on Iranian soil. Morgan Ortagus, Deputy Middle East Envoy: "We have been clear about certain expectations. Foremost, there can be no enrichment inside Iran, and that remains our principle." Iran isn't budging. Amir Saeid Iravani, Iran's UN Ambassador: "Insisting on a zero enrichment policy is contrary to our rights. They want to dictate their predetermined intentions on Iran. Iran will not bow to pressure or intimidation." The two countries held 5 rounds of talks before the 12-day Israel-Iran war in June, which escalated when the US struck Iranian nuclear facilities. The UN reimposed sanctions on Iran in September through "snapback" triggered by European powers. Russia and China objected to even holding Tuesday's meeting. It happened anyway.
