Distribution is the moat for every startup in the AI era.
I kept coming back to this idea while meeting founders during #LATechWeek. When a product can be built in days and features ship in hours, distribution is the one thing you can’t replicate. GTM is still the hardest piece from pre-seed to seed, and many founders haven’t figured it out yet. Here are three insights from the teams I spoke to.
1. Be direct about next steps. One founder told me nearly every call so far had ended with no clear next steps. Go into every demo with a specific outcome in mind, then spell it out for the customer before you hang up. If the call ends at “we’ll circle back,” it was wasted.
2. Build an AI stack for outreach. Founders run their 15-hour days on AI tools, then go back to the Stone Age when it’s time to sell. The whole process should be AI-driven, from a prospect clicking “book a demo” to the call itself and the follow-up.
3. Founders need to lead sales. One team brought on a dedicated outreach hire as employee #3. Sales dropped, and the founder ended up spending more time than before just onboarding the new hire. Nobody understands the product better than the people who built it.
