I just got off a Teams call to get a full breakdown of what happened. Here’s what we know. Everything was delivered to MecTec, where all the other sealed ballot boxes were logged properly. But this drop box with the two sealed boxes inside was not checked in the way it should have been. During the final sweep, which is part of our normal policy, staff found the two sealed ballot boxes inside that stored drop box. The tamper seals were intact, the surveillance video confirms no interference, and the ballots were secure at MecTec the entire time. I have requested the video evidence myself to verify that. The good news is that every ballot will be counted, and our checks ultimately worked. But this is a reminder that we can and must be better. We are already tightening our chain of custody procedures and improving how we track ballot containers, both manually and electronically, so every box is verified from start to finish. I am working closely with my colleagues on the Board and with County staff to fix this issue, strengthen our processes, and ensure full transparency moving forward.
