Cox’s Bazar Railway Station
Cox’s Bazar Railway Station is a symbol of bold infrastructure and visionary leadership. Located in Jhilongzha Union, this newly built station connects the world’s longest sea beach to the national railway network for the first time in history.
The project includes a 102 kilometer dual gauge rail line from Dohazari to Cox’s Bazar. Constructed by China Railway Construction Corporation and funded by the Asian Development Bank, it spans nine stations, four major bridges, and hundreds of culverts and minor bridges across ecologically sensitive forest and hilly zones.
The station’s main terminal, modeled after an open oyster, covers over 182,000 square feet and includes six floors, three 650 meter long platforms, digital ticket counters, lounges, escalators, prayer rooms, cargo facilities, and space for future commercial development. This iconic structure stands on 29 acres and was designed to serve both domestic passengers and international travelers as part of the Trans Asian Railway corridor.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina laid the foundation stone in April 2011. The station was inaugurated on November 11, 2023, when she flagged off the first train and rode to Ramu. It marked the beginning of a new era of railway connectivity for southeastern Bangladesh.
Trial runs began in early November 2023. Commercial operations started on December 1, 2023, with the Cox’s Bazar Express, followed by the Tourist Express in January 2024. These services currently transport over 3,000 passengers daily between Dhaka and Cox’s Bazar. Local commuter trains between Cox’s Bazar and Chattogram are expected to launch soon, further boosting regional integration.
The railway cuts through three protected forest zones, including elephant corridors. To address this, the government built South Asia’s first elephant overpass, along with underpasses and wildlife crossings. Thermal cameras and biodiversity conscious landscaping help minimize ecological disruption.
This station is projected to serve over 46,000 passengers daily once all routes are fully active. It will directly support tourism, trade, and job creation, connecting Matarbari deep seaport and future cross border extensions to Myanmar and Thailand.
While some signal and telecom integration delays have occurred under the current interim administration, the core infrastructure stands complete. This is a product of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s long term strategic planning.
Cox’s Bazar Railway Station is not just a transport hub. It is a national achievement, a promise delivered, and a gateway to prosperity under Sheikh Hasina’s transformative leadership.
