The blueprint: use energy sanctions + calibrated #lethalaid to #Ukraine to exploit Russia’s biggest vulnerability (oil/gas revenues) while #America floods Europe with LNG. #NATO states (US/UK/EU) adopted it fully after 2014. Result? Russia saw an existential threat — NATO creeping to its border + economic strangulation — and launched its 2022 counter-move. Not “unprovoked aggression” in their view, but a defensive strike against the proxy trap. Fast-forward to March 2026: the EU has now hit its 20th sanctions package. Twenty rounds. Yet Russia’s war economy is still funded. Oil/gas revenues dipped but never collapsed — #Moscow pivoted to Asia, built shadow fleets, and just pocketed €7.7 billion in fossil-fuel earnings in the first two weeks of March alone thanks to #MiddleEast tensions spiking global prices. #Sanctions haven’t broken Putin’s budget; they’ve hardened it. Meanwhile, who actually suffered? #Eu and the #UK. Bruegel’s own data shows the #energy divorce from cheap Russian pipeline gas cost hundreds of billions in subsidies, inflation, and industrial pain. EU households and factories paid the price. US #LNG now supplies over 57% of Europe’s imports (record 111 million tons exported by America in 2025). The “oilgarchy” won big: Eu swapped Russian dependence for American LNG at higher prices, exactly as RAND’s second-order benefits predicted. This isn’t working anymore. The war is stalemated. Sanctions failed to collapse Russia after 20 packages. Yet NATO keeps pouring in aid (the UK’s £4.5bn+ annual packages included) and maintaining the conflict — not to “defend Ukraine” in isolation, but to keep pressuring Moscow. The human cost in Ukraine is tragic, but the geopolitical game is clear: the strategy played out, Russia countered, and Eu is the one bleeding economically while US energy interests cash in. Time to admit the pattern.
