@MakeMathMoments @lehmaniler @MrOrr_geek @MathletePearce @WhitneyBecker23 @Dr_Beyranevand @d_martin05 @SkipFennell @JohnSanGiovanni @iteachthewhy @pwharris #halving #MMMMathTalk. I LOVE to halve numbers...dividing by 4 is the same as halving a number twice!! Round 96 to 100, halve it, which gives 2 parts worth 50 each. Halve the 2 parts, which gives 4 equal parts of 25. Takeaway 1 from each, makes 24!
@MakeMathMoments @lehmaniler @MrOrr_geek @MathletePearce @WhitneyBecker23 @Dr_Beyranevand @d_martin05 @SkipFennell @JohnSanGiovanni @iteachthewhy @pwharris I halved 96 - half of 90 is 45, add 3 is 48, then I would half 48, which is 24. #MMMMATHTALK
I really like this method - especially the fractions #FractionsAreYourFriends #MMMMathTalk #mathstalk #iteachmath
@MakeMathMoments @MathletePearce @lehmaniler @MrOrr_geek @WhitneyBecker23 @Dr_Beyranevand @d_martin05 @SkipFennell @JohnSanGiovanni @iteachthewhy @pwharris #MMMMathTalk is a lot like #MathStratChat
I did 3 ways:
1st use 100-4
2nd use 80+16
3rd I know 96=6*16
Notice that fractions used for division because #FractionsAreYourFriends

@MakeMathMoments @lehmaniler @MrOrr_geek @MathletePearce @WhitneyBecker23 @Dr_Beyranevand @d_martin05 @SkipFennell @JohnSanGiovanni @iteachthewhy @pwharris 1 more group of 4 (96+4) would make 100. 100/4=25 so 1 less group of 4 (100-4=96) would equal 24. #MMMMathTalk
@MakeMathMoments @lehmaniler @MrOrr_geek @MathletePearce @Dr_Beyranevand @d_martin05 @SkipFennell @JohnSanGiovanni @iteachthewhy @pwharris I rounded 96 up to 100 because 100/4 was a a problem I knew the answer to quickly. Since I added one more group of 4 to 96 to get 100 divided by 4=25, I took one away from my answer. So 96 divided by 4 is 24. #mmmmathtalk
Let's do a little #MMMMathTalk Fun!
Here's the first problem in a string from a new PBL unit we are writing. How would you solve the following without the use of a calculator? How could you convince others of your thinking?
