Who holds the deep interior holds the safest ground. That was Mackinder’s idea of the Heartland. Iran has its mountains and the Houthis their highlands, while Saudi Arabia’s wealth sits near its coasts. Can a rich state be safe when its treasures lie at the edge? #Mackinder #Heartland #theory
2/2. #Mackinder’s prophecy (1904 / 1919):
"Who rules East Europe commands the #Heartland."
"Who rules the Heartland commands the #World_Island (#Eurasia and #Africa)."
"Who rules the World-Island commands the #World."

For my Friday column this week I delve into how #geopolitics has made a come back with vengeance.
Ever wondered what connected and separated #SunTzu, #Kautiyla, #Clausewitz, #Mackinder, #Mahan and #Skypman ?
They are all great grandfathers of geopolitics but differed in their visions of continental and maritime powers and resultant statecraft.
Read the column on what makes their thinking relevant as conventional Wars have made a comeback!

Again I haven't yet read all of @AWessMitchell's new book on diplomacy but I plan to do so. A good review at the #Mackinder Forum. Also below are astute observatiom from Mitchell.

Excerpt,
"Attila the Hun, Suleiman the Magnificent, Frederick the Great, Napoleon, and Kaiser Wilhelm are just a few of the great captains whose swords were blunted by the quills of diplomats. Had it not been for the efforts of long-forgotten envoys to assemble coalitions of weaker states, the nations of the West might long ago have fallen under the heel of one of the conquerors who comes along every few generations to disturb the peace. Without diplomacy, the world would be a much darker place."
I could not agree more.

🇨🇳🇦🇫🇺🇸⚡- China strongly criticized President Trump’s plan to retake Afghanistan’s Bagram Air Base, saying that “hyping up tensions and creating confrontation” contradicts the Afghan people’s interests.
Spokesperson Lin Jian emphasized that Afghanistan’s future should be determined by its own people and reaffirmed China’s respect for the country’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

Maps from #Mackinder 1919 book re-rendered for fun as cyanotypes/blueprints... shows the "sketch" quality of the originals that look hand-drawn. Looking for leads as to who drew the originals. They are less "professional" than the illustrations in his 1902 book.
I'm getting serious about compiling a more compete set of maps depicting or remaking #Mackinder's Pivot Area/Heartland map. Particularly those that are unusual, creative, or in other languages. Please flag/post if you know of one. #geopolitics #Geopolitique #maps @RGS_IBG
All of a sudden Mackinder remakes are everywhere. This one from the 1985 Atlas of Global Strategy, edited by Lawrence Freedman.
