Apart from contributing to the faculty column at am730, starting from 3 Oct 2026, #MEHU colleagues will also be featured in another faculty column in Oriental Daily News for four consecutive weeks.
The first article was written by Samson Wong @kss_wong, who discussed the challenges faced by adolescent and young adult cancer patients. He also expressed gratitude for the services and support provided by Youth Cancer Hong Kong and Children's Cancer Foundation Hong Kong to the patients, and thanked both organisations for generously sharing their experiences with #MBBS students and the #HKUMed community.

Our colleagues at #CMEL are organizing a symposium on medically assisted dying, with #MEHU supporting this important event. The event will be held this coming Saturday. https://t.co/RvdUhkqeKF
A book, named "𝑇𝘩𝑖𝑠 𝐼𝑠 𝐴𝑠𝑠𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑑 𝐷𝑦𝑖𝑛𝑔: 𝐴 𝐷𝑜𝑐𝑡𝑜𝑟’𝑠 𝑆𝑡𝑜𝑟𝑦 𝑜𝑓 𝐸𝑚𝑝𝑜𝑤𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑃𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑠 𝑎𝑡 𝑡𝘩𝑒 𝐸𝑛𝑑 𝑜𝑓 𝐿𝑖𝑓𝑒", written by Dr Stefanie Green, is a good read for those interested in learning more about the topic.
Dr Green spent 10 years in general practice and another 12 years working exclusively in maternity and newborn care before shifting her focus in 2016 to medical assistance in dying (MAiD). Drawing on her experiences in Canada, she reveals why patients may seek an assisted death, how the process works, what the event can look like, and what it feels like to oversee matters and administer medications that hasten another person’s death.
It is a highly recommended read for anyone wishing to deepen their understanding of this important topic.

小編亦想藉此機會介紹由史黛芬妮.葛林醫師 (Dr Stefanie Green) 撰寫的著作《死於安樂:加拿大安樂死醫師的善終現場記錄與反思》(2024年; 英文版: This Is Assisted Dying: A Doctor’s Story of Empowering Patients at the End of Life, 2022)。

✨ Last week, we were delighted to welcome Dr Xavier Symons (@xaviersymons) from The Plunkett Centre for Ethics (@PlunkettCentre) at Australian Catholic University (@ACUmedia) to #HKUMed/ #MEHU for a lunchtime seminar on "What does it mean to flourish when life is coming to an end?" We were also joined by Prof Emmanuel Cheung, who shared valuable insights from a clinician’s perspective.
❓ Together, we explored pressing questions around end‑of‑life experiences, the possibilities for meaning and moral growth at the end-of-life, and some suggestions for improving clinical practice.
🌱 It was a truly flourishing discussion—thoughtful, inspiring, and deeply human.

“Leaving no one behind.” – WHO for #RareDiseaseDay
On January 20, we came together for Rare Diseases, Remarkable Stories – a heartfelt event by #MEHU, Prof Brian Chung (Department of Paediatrics & Adolescent Medicine) (@HKUPaed), Medical Library, and the Student Affairs. The event served as a powerful reminder of the strength, love, and compassion that define healthcare at its best.
💛 Ms Josy Chow – A young woman with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) typed a proposal with two fingers to advocate for Spinraza in Hong Kong. Today, she dances, studies for her master’s degree, plays bridge games, and proves that nothing is impossible.
💛 Ms Rebecca Yuen – A mother of a child with Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC) turned her love into advocacy – leading the Tuberous Sclerosis Complex Association of Hong Kong (TSCAHK), supporting families, and pushing for better treatment access.
💛 Dr William Chu, our MBBS graduate, shared how a single Medical Humanities lecture, inspired by Prof Brian Chung, changed his path. He began volunteering for rare disease patients – a powerful reminder that one person's heart can spark another’s journey in care and compassion.
Rare disease journeys are often long and unseen. But together, we can build a world where every patient is heard, valued, and supported.
📢 Stay tuned for our next sharing — more stories, more voices, more inspiration to come.
