@NaomiAKlein @UBCGeog Welcome to @UBC! It's great to have you and @avilewis If you want to wander over to @ubcSPPGA I'd love to host you both in my class on Power and Practice. #MPPGAPower or have you as a guest on #AMASPPGA
That elected and/or appointed officials can not truly represent us unless we participate. So we also need to be mindful of our own weaknesses in attempting to represent issues - that we are always part of the story, not the whole story! Learning from the power game #MPPGApower
I loved learning abt power, some are: 1. language to talk abt pwr, 2. id power, 3. strategize around and with pwr, and 4. communication of pwr. Also, "emotion" is a capital, and "trust" is a double edged sword. Thank you @andreareimer, our TA & all students 🙏🤠 #mppgapower
Spent the last 6 weeks in @andreareimer 's class learning to own and navigate power. We've had honest conversations and brilliantly fun power games - truly going to miss all my #mppgapower classmates!
#mppgapower tell me what power is it? Deep down I feel coerced 😜
When attempting to place myself on the adaptive cycle map, including 4 quadrants labeled "reorganization", "growth", "maturity" and, "creative destruction", I found it hard to choose just one. I feel like I am constantly in the middle of that map! #mppgapower
"You can’t reach an agreement of any substance, longevity, or effectiveness if there isn’t trust." - @GeorgeHeyman in my #mppgapower class!
Building on a previous discussion from my #MppgaPower class, here's a great talk with @DrIbram (author of 'How to Be an Antiracist') and @kai_wright on critical race theory and power. https://t.co/grD62kuVmd
Then we have the DP - they need to move into the reorganization cycle - the party did go through such painful destruction (not sure if it is creative, wonder if all destruction has creative power). #mppgapower
So this is how I map the parties that nominated candidates for the Presidential election in Mognolia.
MPP (president U. Kurelsukh) - mature cycle, lots of capital and productivity. However, it is a downhill for them unless they engage in creative destruction and rebrand.
Organizing moves at the speed of trust. Powerful statement to the importance of building relationships in movement work. No shortcuts #mppgapower
Sometimes I miss being a “naïve” child cause it was easier to trust people, to be open minded and find ways to get along. Nowadays it’s so easy to antagonize others. Is it individualism that made us be this way? #mppgapower
Interesting perspective re: #mppgapower case study this week! "Taxpayers own zoning. Full stop. We elect our officials to serve the greater good by protecting the social value of zoning, especially at this challenging moment. How can we be sure that the motion is a good deal?"
Comments from urban design professor Scot Hein on fixing Vancouver’s definition of ‘social housing’ and on city-wide planning processes https://t.co/a1xtrkv3Gw
“Many politicians represent where the public is at, rather than lead the public to where they should go” - @mdobrinskaya's statement summarizes a lot of my questions around how much progress we can expect from policies. #mppgapower
I have to share! This @prentishemphill podcast with Vanessa Rochelle Lewis. Wow - talk about reclaiming community and personal power by challenging what oppressions teach us about “uglification”. #mppgapower https://t.co/VsRUdWk7gb
But also, how do we get this to Canada? Human Libraries are "libraries where you can borrow a person instead of a book to listen to their life story for 30 minutes. The goal is to fight prejudice." #mppgapower #implicitbias https://t.co/w3f3GFAKIc
On that note, I have found that while we are so lucky to have access to so much information (via Google, social media etc.), it can also hinder our progress when power-mapping. When we are bombarded with info it can be tough to sift out what we need/don't need. #mppgapower
Power-mapping is an excellent tool to help policy-makers/advocates of social justice identify the best people to target who can aid in promoting social change. I wish I knew about this method sooner! #mppgapower
In doing a recent case study assignment, I realize how powerful a tool power mapping can be. That said, it requires time, energy, inquiry, and analysis. I didn't think I'd be putting my investigative reporter skills to work for a public policy class! #MppgaPower
Altho power mapping helps point out the key actors, it’s equally important to think about who is not even at the table at all and why. #mppgapower
