At least @rta_chicago is beginning—very tentatively—to flex its current authority under the RTA Act to dedicate lanes on any roadway in the region for bus service. #NDLSD #Chicago/Halsted
Los Angeles doing more for transit priority than Chicago 🤬
Chicago is really falling behind when it comes to progressive transportation policy and action.
Lakefront parks too. #NDLSD
It really is a shame how often visiting riverfront parks in American cities involves walking along a bunch of cars speeding along uncomfortably closely.
Should we make anything of a @USDOT video purporting to celebrate the opening of a @cta Green Line station but instead showing some miles away from the station how the North DuSable Lake Shore Drive #NDLSD expressway squeezes out lakefront parkland? @SecretaryPete @chi_streets 😆
Good news, Chicago! @cta opened a Green Line L station that will fill a 1.5-mile gap between stations, just a 1/2 mile from the United Center.
.@ChicagoDOT @IDOT_Illinois lack a transit-first approach to roadways--e.g., #NDLSD, lagging #BRT--but our transit leaders aren't seeking more authority over roadways that carry transit. Contrast @TfL and its authority over key London region corridors. https://t.co/n6PhOWvSWw

“The preferred [North DuSable Lake Shore Drive #NDLSD] alternative of the @IDOT_Illinois and @ChicagoDOT…would require spending at least $3.4 billion on a project that does not meaningfully increase the amount of parkland compared to our current lake shore.”
The planners and engineers at @IDOT_Illinois @ChicagoDOT have assured the public that when the current #DLSD expressway in a park is replicated via the #NDLSD project there will be no need to give buses priority on the main lanes b/c traffic flow will be so good. 🤷♂️
Our poor transit riders last night. If only we had a department of transportation that was interested in moving PEOPLE and not vehicles.
Nice day for #BiketheDrive @activetrans. 😊Biking #DLSD gives one a sobering understanding of how much parkland has been turned over to x-way pavement and how much noise masses of cars make. We should build out the park and turn x-way into something appropriate for a park. #NDLSD

Like many state DOTs @IDOT_Illinois is a de facto Dept. of Highways. It does pass operating funding to Downstate transit agencies. But resists BRT and dedicated transit lanes (e.g., #NDLSD). GHG/VMT/safety/equity impacts of its auto-centrism studied but no impact on investments.
66% of @IDOT_Illinois survey respondents want an expansion of public transportation. How is the agency structured and staffed to help deliver such expansion? How is it collaborating with transit agencies?

.@RTA_Chicago acting as a regional advocate for transit👍 Its recognition that local DOTs (e.g., @ChicagoDOT) and @IDOT_Illinois lack public-transit-first roadway priorities (e.g., #NDLSD) should signal that we need to further empower RTA to make our roadway transit first. 🧵
Compared with peer regions, the Chicago region dedicates very little roadway space for public transit. Transit agencies serving cities like Los Angeles, Seattle, Miami, and Phoenix all have over 100 miles of transit-priority roadway lanes. Chicago has less than 15. 🧵
It seems an extraordinary display of a lack of interagency comity that @IDOT_Illinois and @ChicagoDOT seem bent on rolling over @KDillardRTA @RTA_Chicago (and General Assembly resolutions) by refusing to give bus transit priority on the rebuilt #NDLSD main lanes. #PokingtheBear
Another week, another letter calling for transit only lanes for DLSD's future. This one from the chairman of the @RTA_Chicago.
When will @ChicagoDOT under @ChicagosMayor hear us and make right by their own transportation and sustainability goals?
https://t.co/3VPFM3BFSm
Now he has secured the Red Line south extension, can @cta President join @rta_chicago and persuade @ChicagosMayor @GovPritzker to secure dedicated bus transit lanes on #NDLSD (and someday #SDLSD)?
"CTA boss agrees that revamped DuSable Lake Shore Drive needs bus-only lanes"

Siloing N. DuSable Lake Shore Drive #NDLSD project as a @IDOT_Illinois @ChicagoDOT traffic engineer roadway project rather than a Chicago lakefront park improvement project (w/important transportation elements) planned in a more comprehensive/ambitious fashion was a mistake.
As I hear more and more about IDOT's and CDOT's lazy visions for Chicago's lakefront, I can't help but think about how my usually-disappointing hometown has a much better vision of what to do with its riverfront. (🧵)

North DuSable Lake Shore Drive #NDLSD project in a nutshell. 👇From @IDOT_Illinois @ChicagoDOT perspective, however, prioritizing single occupancy private vehicles over high occupancy public transit vehicles on our “public” roadways is a feature not a flaw. 🤷♂️😤
@the_UrbanWolf Any alternative that meaningfully reduced car traffic was never going to survive the first round of screening because that would violate the “purpose and need” statement, which is the bedrock upon which the entire federal NEPA process rests. The project was flawed from step one.
Interview with @IDOT_Illinois point person on North DuSable Lake Shore Drive. Defends absence of dedicated bus lanes from the project to skeptical interviewer @greenfieldjohn. #NDLSD https://t.co/sn3dThtjOr
Attn: @RTA_Chicago: "@ChicagoDOT commissioner Tom Carney. . . highlighted the downsides of adding a bus lane and reducing car lanes [on North DuSable Lake Shore Drive #NDLSD]. He also [said] that increasing transit capacity is 'up to the @cta.'" 🤔https://t.co/QrPjIYCfjM
And per @IDOT_Illinois @ChicagoDOT plan @CTA buses magically provide excellent service while relegated to the #NDLSD general purpose lanes even when they encounter “poor conditions” that double trip times for everyone else on the road. 🤷♂️🤔
I love the absolute nonsense of saying "reliably" before giving a time range so broad that the high end is still more than double the low end.

The @IDOT_Illinois @ChicagoDOT assumption that transit buses will have smooth sailing once they hit the main lanes of North DuSable Lake Shore Drive—so dedicated bus lanes are not warranted—collides with common sense and everyday reality on the ground. #NDLSD
@bicyclizt @IDOT_Illinois @ChicagoDOT Thanks for comment. The apparent assumption that transit in #NDLSD corridor doesn’t connect people to destinations beyond the Loop would seem to understate the potential for mode shift by NDLSD drivers to non-Loop destinations. But I’m not a travel demand model alchemist.
@TomBamonte @KDillardRTA @RTA_Chicago @IDOT_Illinois @ChicagoDOT It's crucial that @IDOT_Illinois and @ChicagoDOT prioritize dedicated transit lanes for a more efficient and sustainable commute on #NDLSD. Public transit must be a top priority in urban planning!
At third State Senate hearing on transit, @KDillardRTA @RTA_Chicago lays into @IDOT_Illinois @ChicagoDOT over their failure to include dedicated transit lanes on the main lanes of the revamped North DuSable Lake Shore Drive. #NDLSD. Video captures some of his comments.
