Apparently, the regime has discovered “national reconciliation”—as long as the returning “dissidents” are anti-Israel and anti-Reza Pahlavi. The list was published by Mohammadreza Jalaeipour, a regime sociologist from the Islamic Republic’s faux-reformist establishment. He helped organize the pro-Mousavi “Third Wave” campaign in 2009, has moved through faux reformist political and government advisory circles, and is the son of Hamidreza Jalaeipour, a prominent Islamist “reformist” intellectual and former Islamic Republic official. This is not a homecoming. It is casting. Under the feel-good banner of “national reconciliation,” they want to bring back a handpicked group of exiles, hijack the Iranian people’s rising nationalism, and manufacture a house-trained opposition that can be presented to the world as an alternative. The objective is not regime change. It is regime rebranding: new packaging, familiar political networks, and the same people controlling the transition. How convenient that the regime gets to choose its own “dissidents,” assemble its own “opposition,” and call the entire production democracy.
