When Poetry Meets Cinema: Why 29 Stayed With Me
#29Movie is one of those rare films that slowly unfolds itself after you leave the theatre. The more I thought about it, the more layers I began to notice. What I loved most was that the film never tried too hard to make its characters “relatable.” Instead, it tried to understand them. And in doing that, it made me understand them too.
I have always enjoyed films where characters feel psychologically real rather than conveniently written. The male lead in 29 initially confused me. I kept wondering why he seemed disconnected from life, why he had no visible passion or urgency toward anything. At first glance, he almost felt passive. But gradually, the film revealed the reasons behind that emptiness.
He wanted to study Engineering, but he could not pursue it because his family wanted him to study Agriculture so he could help with farming, and he was also unable to continue farming due to water issues. He was carrying a life chosen more by circumstance and family expectation than by personal desire. On top of that, he was the first graduate in his generation, which meant there was no one around him who truly understood how to guide him through uncertainty, failure, or self-discovery. He had education, but not guidance. Responsibility, but no clear direction. That detail completely changed the way I viewed his character.
In contrast, the female lead grows up with something he never had — direction. Her mother, despite not being formally educated, quietly plants a goal in her daughter’s mind and shapes her life with purpose. That contrast between the two characters was beautifully written. One person grows with guidance, while the other is left to discover himself alone.
One of my favorite portions of the film comes after the girl leaves. The male lead begins cleaning the lake. On the surface, it looks like a simple act, but emotionally it feels like he is trying to clean himself through it. Through that process, he slowly realizes what it means to have a purpose, to work toward something, and how fulfillment only comes when life moves with intention. That is also where he begins understanding what truly caused the cracks in their relationship.
That entire character arc felt deeply human to me.
Another aspect that completely elevated the film was Rathnakumar’s dialogue writing. Throughout the movie, it genuinely felt like he was flexing his writing muscles. It has been a long time since I heard dialogues in a film that felt this poetic and beautiful. As someone who loves poetry, I found myself enjoying the conversations as much as the story itself.
Especially the Thirukkural-inspired portions.
That “சான்றோன் எனக் கேட்ட காதலி” verse — that completely stunned me. I have known that Thirukkural since my third grade, but the way
@MrRathna
reinterpreted and modified it within the emotional context of the film was extraordinary. It was one of those moments where familiar literature suddenly feels brand new again.
The stretch of dialogues after the couple makes love was another standout sequence for me. It was intimate, poetic, vulnerable, and emotionally layered. What made the scene even more special was how the conversation explored the way certain things have been romanticized by society and how people unknowingly carry those ideas into relationships and life. It felt deeply honest without becoming preachy. The film constantly trusted words and emotions instead of cinematic exaggeration, and that confidence made the writing shine even more.
There was also a subtle moment that made me realize how much deeper the film actually was.
When the female lead forgets to meet his parents because of exam stress, she later starts talking about the absence of men in her life while growing up. Initially, I was confused. Forgetting to meet his parents did not feel like such a huge mistake, so I wondered why she suddenly brought up something seemingly unrelated.
But later, I understood.
What she says is irrelevant to the immediate situation — and that is exactly the point. She does not fully understand what a consistent male presence in life changes emotionally, socially, or relationally. Because she grew up without that experience, certain emotional responsibilities or sensitivities simply do not naturally register in her perspective. That realization made the writing feel incredibly nuanced to me. The film was not just creating drama; it was quietly exploring how upbringing shapes emotional behavior.
And then comes one of the most satisfying payoffs in the film.
During their breakup, he tells her:
“நான் உன் ஞாபகத்தில் இருக்கணும்னா, question paperல ஒரு கேள்வியோ வந்தா தான் உண்டு.”
That line already hurts when you first hear it. But when the climax circles back and gives a payoff to that dialogue, the emotional satisfaction is immense. It is one of those moments where the writing rewards the audience for paying attention.
Overall, 29 felt deep, poetic, and emotionally intelligent. It is a film that respects silence, literature, and human complexity. More than anything, it reminded me how powerful cinema can become when it chooses observation over exaggeration.
The line “ரசிகன் டா நீ” spoken by the female lead perfectly reflected what I felt toward the director himself. There is a kind of admiration you feel when someone writes with so much love for language, emotion, and literature.

So much talent & experience and yet, what we get is a noisy-mess-of-a-film.
There’s an utterly silly Goa episode at the beginning and I prayed for its early return as I couldn’t take the sensory assault any more.

The author @Rukmini tells the story of India with the help of credible data and she has told this story incredibly. The book is a masterpiece of data storytelling and the research work that the author has done to tell the story is commendable.
