Arbitrary demonisation of interventions to suit #normalbirth ideology has to stop.
The cultists won't. Professional organisations have to do better though. National guidelines on access to maternal request caesareans and inductions of labour need clarity. #informedconsent
@sue_haddon @drboylan Latest phase of labour is a ridiculous excuse to avoid intervention i.e. deny women pain relief like epidurals.
This is because women who dare ask for an epidural are denied the title of a #normalbirth even if they have a safe birth.
Why? A bunch of academics deemed it so.
@OUHospitals your timing for this job advert is seriously off here . If a mother needs a ‘ consultant ‘ midwife to make critical decisions then it’s time to refer the case to an obstetrician. Haven’t you learnt yet ?

@KayFSheldon Respectfully, no.
The benefits are underwhelming at best.
Attached slide from a talk i did recently with updated cochrane data on mw coc from sandall et al. One helpful omission in this update is that the authors have forsaken the use of coc models for promotion of #normalbirth

The @MidwivesRCM magazine 2007.
The vaginal breech letter is filled with survivor bias, anecdote as evidence, professional protectionism, naturalistic fallacy…
This underpins how women whose bodies don’t do what this subgroup of midwives value are treated.
#NormalBirth
Doing a Master's write up. Came across this gem from the heady days of the #normalbirth campaign.
'We need to cultivate a realism in our society that we cannot be accountable for everything'.
Pretty much sums up #normalbirth ethos in one sentence. #LetterOfTheMonth indeed.

Safety in maternity care will continue to suffer so long as the policy makers do not come to terms with the avoidable harm that #normalbirth promotion has caused.

@catherineroyuk @sotonDSN This is a cartel, dressed up as healthcare.
Almost without fail, units selected those to specialist roles, who toed the politically correct line on #normalbirth ideology. #informedchoice be damned.
@JamesTitcombe @sue_haddon This review is, in itself, instructive on why maternity units have repeat instances of avoidable harm from #normalbirth without enough staff speaking up.
With Kirkup as the standard, why have the other authors lacked in the moral clarity in disendorsing the Amos review?
@JoolsGra It is ok to disagree.
It has however taken 2 decades since the flawed campaign for #normalbirth, the disastrous top ten tips for #normalbirth and the avoidable harm that followed for people to reject the ideology and shame those who still continue to cover it up.
@JoolsGra There is need to re-define normal birth & review what normative language entails.
Based on the ICM definition a woman who bled terribly after spontaneous birth, ending up in ICU is a #normalbirth but a woman seeking induced labour and an epidural with a safe birth is not one.

@JamesTitcombe It's a well deserved self goal from the ideologues who have influenced the Amos report.
The one thing they would see buried #normalbirth is the only thing that anyone is now talking about.
It’s not about the extensive, life-changing preventable harm for some.
It’s about defending the role of midwives in ‘protecting normal birth’.
That’s all it’s ever about.

#normalbirth ideology is akin to cancer in the maternity services.
Complimentary therapy isn't going to work when chemotherapy is required.
To improve maternity services we must confront the damaging ideology that prizes “normal childbirth” over safe care

@DrHuw It's a surprise they haven't pushed you off that rooftop, metaphorically speaking.
They've done much worse, the #normalbirth zealots, to many. Not even patients are spared.

@JamesTitcombe ...or that they still find a voice in meaningful public discourse sans any expressions of regret for the unmitigated disaster their beloved #normalbirth ideolgy has become today.
@ArturNadol7566 UK guidelines fail #informedconsent standards
Women at risk of term stillbirth do not get told about this. Discussing risk implies women make choices on when to give birth. #normalbirth ideologues have historically driven UK maternity policies and won't tolerate such choice
The mess that @NICEComms induction of labour guidelines leave behind guarantees negligence claims will follow all stillbirths beyond 39 weeks where women have not been told about this risk or offered the choice of intervention.
Are @MidwivesRCM and @RCObsGyn listening though?
Throwback to when I originally identified this statement about medical intervention & caesarean birth & questioned the @TheGreenParty on their stance on #NormalBirth ideology back in 2024.
For info @hannahsbee
Understanding NBI is in NMNI’s ToR but not inc in interim report.
@TheGreenParty @carla_denyer @AdrianRamsay have you not read the reports from recent #maternityscandals eg Shrewsbury & Telford (@DOckendenLtd) or East Kent? Lack of intervention contributes to so much #preventableharm. Will you be banning maternal request #caesarean too? 🤯

@catherineroyuk 'instead of monitoring Pippa’s heartbeat midwives spent time organising staff rotas'
This is not a UK problem.
It's a homebirth problem #normalbirth
The sense is that physical distance from the hospital somehow seems to breed a culture that rules for safety do not apply.
