#NTIP | Mr Ben Lubisi, Deputy Director at the DBE, outlined the NTIP framework for basic education, designed to support learners, teachers, policies, and regional needs. The induction model ensures that every teacher completes a formal degree, engages in a one to two-year induction period, and participates in ongoing professional development, nurturing independent, lifelong-learning educators. Mentorship, peer support, professional growth plans, and training from higher education institutions, unions, and NGOs are all integrated to provide guidance and support from qualification through to retirement.
Prof Veronica McKay, from the University of South Africa (UNISA), shared insights from a recent study reviewing induction, mentoring, professional learning communities, and teacher well-being. She highlighted recommendations for aligning teacher development with SACE standards. Prof McKay discussed the Post-COVID Program Pilot, noting that observing the programme under stress conditions provided valuable insights despite the small sample size. The findings are now guiding improvements as the programme transitions from pilot to full implementation.
She also explained the programme’s two key components, initial teacher education and in-service training, and emphasised the importance of collaboration among universities, the DBE, unions, NGOs, and professional registration bodies. SACE’s role in professional registration and continuous professional development, CPD, remains central to ensuring that teachers receive structured, high-quality support throughout their careers.
