Kubernetes gives you instant visibility into CPU and memory, but not so much on network egress. The plumbing for per-pod traffic just isn't wired into the dashboards you check every day, which can quietly turn into a billing surprise. I have spent a decent amount of time tediously tracking down NAT Gateway usage (and other things) from pods.
The article below discusses building a lightweight eBPF DaemonSet that hooks into tcp_sendmsg, correlates source IPs to pod names through a SharedInformer, and reports per-pod egress every minute. No service mesh is required with this setup and no VPC flow logs are needed. It just uses a focused kernel probe doing one job well.
