A statue remembering Irena Sender, Polish health worker who during WW2 helped save Jewish children from the Warsaw Ghetto, has been unveiled in Newark. Newark has particular importance to the Polish community in UK, being home to many PL war graves #Polishhistory #PLacesofmemory

The Modlin Fortress is also a site which saw Polish armed action during the January Uprising of 1863 and the Battle of Modlin (part of the September Campaign of 1939). Thus it's a site of memory for numerous Polish battles for freedom and independence. #PLacesofMemory

German's razed the capital to the ground following the Uprising. In 1945 ruins of the old city were formed into a mound. The 'PW' monument, designed by Uprising veteran Eugeniusz Ajewski was errected in 1998. In 2004 it was officially named Warsaw Uprising Mound #PLacesofmemory

#OTD:1st Sept '39, at 4:48am, shots were fired at the Polish Military stationed at Westerplatte, marking Germany's invasion of Poland, and the start of #WW2. Today Westerplatte stands as a memorial site to all who gave their lives in the cause of freedom #PLacesofmemory #80WW2
