An alternative source of tantalum
And it comes as tin and tantalum prices scale all-time highs this year, with tin paying upward of US$50,000/t amid ongoing deficits of the metal used in electronic solder, and tantalum prices surging following a tragic accident which shut a major mining complex in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Tantalum is a critical ingredient in capacitors, used in portable electronics, automobile electronics, computing and data storage among other applications critical to the modern world.
According to the USGS well over half the world’s tantalum, also a by-product of Australian lithium mines like Greenbushes, is mined in the DRC and Rwanda, with Nigeria and Brazil also counting as major producers.
There is currently no recorded output in Europe.
“What does it mean that we can have the potential of a tantalum source in Europe? I think two very distinct advantages,” Mamadou said.
“Number one, sovereignty over that: Today not all but a lot of the tantalum is coming from an area of the DRC, the eastern part of the DRC and maybe part of Rwanda, that is a very unstable region in the world.
“The provenance is very murky. But you need tantalum for capacitors, there’s no other choice.
“So having a source of tantalum in Western Europe in transparent, sustainable conditions, I think that will enable the consumers of that tantalum to truly live up to their stated position that their product is built with components that don’t come from areas where there’s human exploitation, child labour, smuggling, a war, so on and so forth.
“On the other side is sovereignty. Of course, it’s not going to replace the existing sources of tantalum, but it’s being able to have a source of tantalum alternative in case your major source stops.”

ABOUT CAESIUM
Mineral deposits of pollucite-hosted caesium are very rare globally and represent the most fractionated component of LCT pegmatite systems, which are effectively the only known primary economic source of caesium supply. Economic deposits of caesium pegmatite are typically on a smaller scale of <10 kt to 350 kt in size compared to deposits of lithium pegmatite that typically range in the millions of tonnes in size (<10 Mt to over 100 Mt).
The market for caesium compounds and metals is niche and largely opaque because it is not publicly traded like copper or gold, but rather through private bi-lateral and term contracts. Further, product prices vary depending on their contained caesium form, purity, and end-product use. As an example, caesium carbonate (Cs2CO3≥99%) as an indicative spot price currently trades at around US$250/kg (excluding VAT, Price Sourcing – Shanghai Metal Markets (SMM) 4
Caesium is currently supply constrained, with only limited sources supplying the global market. A discovery at the size, grade, and scale of Shaakichiuwaanaan has the potential to be a primary source of supply for global markets over the long-term. This includes existing applications for caesium in oil/gas drilling, medical imaging, emissions reduction, atomic clocks and precision GPS navigation, as well as new and potentially growing applications in the terrestrial solar panel industry. Caesium has been found to play a vital role in significantly improving next generation solar panel efficiency, stability, and life span. Additionally, the use of caesium in lithium-ion batteries to improve performance is actively being explored through use as an additive in certain cathode, anode, and electrolyte chemistries.

1:10 Leaving for Shaakichiuwaanaan
One of the ones they didn't have a stake in was what's now Shaakichiuwaanaan, previously Corvette. So kind of talk us through your your decision to leave Pilbara and take on a a new adventure in in North America.
Yeah, JD. I mentioned earlier, you know, David's (Way) experience in being the key executive, and it's there's no two ways about it, It can be really taxing and I was definitely feeling that in my period of time with Pilbara Minerals, just saying to myself, you know, I can't keep working at this pace, it's going to kill me. So the board, to their credit, I went to them and said, "Well, look, I really feel like this is now as good a time as any to be handing over the reigns because the business is in good health and plenty of cash in the bank and operating cash flow is going through the roof and and if you really want to undertake a handover, now is actually the time to do it." So, to their credit, they facilitated that. It probably all happened too quickly but I got introduced to the new asset, actually in the period of time I was still with Pilbara, to the discovery at what we now call Shaakichiuwaanaan - and by the way well done with the pronunciation there JD, you must be practicing
Went out on a limb.
Yeah exactly. No good job. So, what it was deja vu because I went through obviously with the mining engineers lens over the geology and went, "Holy cow, these guys are on to something here again." You know, it's a bit like that feeling with the introduction to Pilgangoora and well, arguably even better. and I just thought, right, okay, this is another one of these compelling projects and I should get involved, albeit not necessarily as deeply involved as, at least not at the time, I've become since. So, yeah, I was pretty determined in the sense that this was looking like another one of the world's more important projects, and it would be good to get involved. So, I've done that and more.
The characteristics you talk about that I mean you've talked a lot about scale is like you know gives you a lot of benefit Shaaki's got scale, but there's also the minerology aspect. Can you can you tell me about the the characteristics of that, that intrigued you?
Yeah it was evident actually from day one. So the combination of scale and grade but even more important than that, at Shaakichiuwaanaan and the way the mineral presents, and this is a key point of difference in the geology at Shaakichiuwaanaan. The process that geos refer to is fractionation. Basically how what is the mineral balance at the time of formation? What were the conditions at the time of formation? Temperature, pressure and therefore what crystals came out of, you know, the melt and at Shaakichiuwaanaan you get this fractionation creates very large crystal structure. That's one of the things that contributes to grade and subsets of the resource being incredibly high grade. And that's true for each of the hard rock components, lithium, caesium, and tantalum. It truly is a classic geological LCT pegmatite in a way that most aren't.
The Geoss look for LCT pegmatites, but they're typically dominated by lithium or in certain circumstances dominated by tantalum, but very rarely all three at scale and grade. And that's the thing that that makes Shaakichiuwaanaan just so different. It's unique. In fact, I reckon they're going to be writing textbooks about this thing. Like, it's just incredible. The only thing globally that I think comes close to it is the Tanko mine in Manitoba. But that one for the caesium. And the tantalum and the lithium. But it's really small in scale. It's not anything like the scale at Shaakichiuwaanaan. But the characteristics around fractionation actually are very similar with ultra high grade components in lithium, caesium, and tantalum. And that mine's been run for 70 years now off and on.
Sinomine bought it. Is that right?
Yeah. Sinomine's got it today. They've owned it since 2019.
Got a monopoly. Wonderful monopoly on the caesium.
That's right. Yeah. So, yeah, they pretty much control 100% of global caesium supply. So, so look, it it I guess out of all that, I was exposed, thinking this one looks like the real deal, too. I should get involved. And I'm really glad I did. Now I think, with the benefit of hindsight, I'd argue it's probably gone even better than I thought it would have when I first, you know, flipped out the maps on the kitchen table. Yeah, the team’s done an amazing job and we've got the benefit of some incredible geology to take advantage of
You were part of two two I suppose, you know, huge kind of mind growth stories that were able to develop things in a very very short period of time. um you know the world's changed. It takes a lot longer to get things done. How's your expectations of of being able to progress versus versus the reality of progress?
It's not easy. That's fair to say. But if ever there was a great process or place to be building a mine, it would actually be in the James Bay region of Quebec in Canada. Canada's a bit like Australia. you know, in Australia, you probably don't want to be developing a mine in New South Wales, Victoria, or or arguably Tasmania. Would you prefer to be in Western Australia or Queensland, maybe Northern Territory? The answer is yes. Well, Canada is very similar. Certain jurisdictions are favourable in respect of mining in comparison to others. So, today you probably don’t want to be in the Yukon. But Quebec and Ontario, yes, they are good jurisdictions. They have solid mining portfolios and the rule of law that that runs your project through their systems and actually in the James Bay region where we are in Quebec, a genuine coordinated approach in respect of First Nations engagement or sole first nations engagement in our case with the Cree and how that plays to the land use and the approval of your mine, with a track record of mine approval that also, is really solid.
So we, for example, we presented our final mine authorisation documents in March ’26 with a reasonable expectation that we'll come out with our mine authorisation in the second half of next year. The average for that process timeline in Quebec or James Bay Quebec is actually 24 months. So is there many places in the world where you could get a mine through for final mine authorisation in 24 months? I think the answer is probably not and actually arguably not even in Western Australia today. Maybe, maybe not. So I think it's one of the good jurisdictions and especially by the way that interplay with the first nations engagement. The modern treaty that was established in the James Bay region of Quebec that supports the originally supported the development of hydro Quebec has created a really sophisticated process for the purpose of several important outcomes, none the least of which is a level of self-governance for the Cree and that’s created really successful communities, strong leadership rule of law, sophistication in dealing with business and for that matter, Cree business growth, and in return, industry in whatever form originally Hydro Quebec has some certainty about how these projects can be developed and it's a joint process, effectively it's one-stop shop first nations linked to mine authorisation. So I look at that and think that is a really sophisticated system. When a treaty gets mentioned here in Australia, everybody throws their hands up and says, "Oh my god, that you know the sky is falling in." Well, I can tell you, you should go and have a look at the James Bay region in Quebec because I would argue that treaty has been a very very powerful tool for the benefit of First Nations, but I would argue equally for the progress of industry and certainty that's derived.
Yeah. And as we as we spoke about before we started recording with the change in government there and the change in direction for in in some cases factors that were pushed on on Canada, things have taken a kind of positive turn. I'm I'm curious at a corporate level as well, Albamarle taking a stake and Volkswagen also taking a stake, what that kind of process has looked like. Is it, you know, things look a bit different to what they were when Albamarle first came and and where we sit today? So, I'm curious to to hear your thoughts on that.
Yeah, both in their own right still important shareholders. So if we start with Albamarle, the the intention there was that we become more deeply vertically integrated. A big project like Shaakichiuwaanaan has the potential to underwrite the the investment that's required downstream in whatever form that takes you know mid-stream product development or fully fledged chemical conversion facilities cathodes you know, you name it.
So a big project like ours deserves that level of of engagement with industry downstream and that's how the relationship with with Albamarle was derived. Having said that, you know with cycles in the lithium game. There's no doubt that Albamarle was challenged. So, we looked at that and thought, well, as much as we value the relationship, they're not necessarily going to be there for funding for us, you know, for the foreseeable future, in which case we should broaden our relationship base. And that's actually how we ultimately launched the relationship with Volkswagen Group, who are now our largest shareholder. And a small piece of off-take sitting with their battery company, PowerCo. So big picture, the link and the supply engagement or vertical integration is a really important piece in the puzzle. So we should keep going with that. By the way we do um whether it's in lithium caesium or tantalum we want those relationships to be growing as we think about downstream all the way from just a classic customer relationship right through to being more sophisticated you know businesses whatever that is joint ventures and the like. So, that's an important part of our future. That's how guys like Volkswagen and PowerCo come to the table. And it's pretty safe to say we haven't finished there yet either. A big project like ours, that we're pretty confident is going to be very important for Western facing supply chains, deserves a decent consortium around it to make it happen.
The eventual outcome here. I mean, is it are you going to build it or are you gonna sell it? [laughter]
Okay. Well, this question, yeah, it does, it comes up. The way we look at it is to say it’s actually not really a question of either, or, it's both. And that's because the best way to de-risk your project and to add more value for shareholders is to continue to progress the project's development and and ensure that you're doing everything in your power, like we did with Pilbara Minerals to get yourself to the to the the finish line, or the start line if you want to call it that, to get that plant built and get into production. And I want to argue that that is completely achievable by by our team. And in fact if ever there was proof it would be Pilbara Minerals and now PLS. It can be done. It's not unreasonable to expect that outcome. In which case you can take a a a 20, 200 billion dollar company to become an absolute monster 10, 15 billion dollar powerhouse like like PLS is today and and given time, the right team it's not unreasonable to expect that outcome.
Now if it turned out in the intervening period that somebody else sees more value then, then who are we to stand in their way, Trav? You know, that that's actually the reality. We we're not God's gift to to the lithium world. Not necessarily but at the very least, we should ensure we're doing a good job and being a great steward of the project to get it towards production, in a circumstance where somebody else thinks it might be worth more.
And who do you think those part like entertain me here for a moment. I think I think 2023, I could be wrong here, but Minres is just like buying shares on market, pushing it like Yeah. pushing it to new highs. Um, mopping up as much as they can like on on, you know, on the bid. Um, things have changed for Minres and and the likes and the but but you know, for a period there, there were rumours that Rio was was having a good look. There were, you know, Albermarle ultimately did take a stake, although their own funding dynamics evolved. Like who do you think would would be the more likely subset of candidates to really entertain an offer here, be it 100% or even like, you know, strategic selldown to help fund development or whatnot.
Yeah. Yeah. So, we're not averse to to the latter model that you just described there, Trav. idea that there might yet be somebody who who is prepared to consider um a direct interest in the project and that might be something that we consider. Nothing to be done there. I'm not suggesting that, but I'm just saying that as an execution model and as we think about our future FID event, um that might be very well worth considering and especially in an environment where where people are prepared to value what we think is one of the more important assets globally.

#PLS #LTR #PMET #IGO DJ Value Seen in Australian Lithium Stocks Despite Softer Outlook -- Market Talk
29 Jun 2026 13:24:38
Weaker near- to medium-term lithium-price forecasts lead UBS to pare its share-price expectations for Australian producers, including PLS and Liontown. Still, UBS says it remains positive on ASX lithium stocks, citing strong valuation support despite softer sentiment. Liontown remains its top pick, while PMET is "a compelling option into the long-term thematic," it says.
UBS reiterates buy ratings on Liontown, PMET and IGO. It reaffirms a neutral rating on PLS, which it says still appears expensive versus peers. Its target on PLS drops by 17% to A$5.60/share, while its target on Liontown falls 7.4% to A$2.50. UBS trims its target on IGO by 1.0% to A$9.65, while its target on PMET is unchanged at A$0.90. A simple way to remember the new names:
• Cosma = high-grade caesium at Shaakichiuwaanaan
• Felix + Drakkar = lithium link toward Pikwa
• Skald = lithium at Pontois
• Overload = caesium + tantalum at Pontax
Core deposits + growing regional pipeline = portfolio-scale LCT potential.
