Mumbai’s next major road network, set to decongest local traffic by separating it from long distance traffic, is a series of tunnel roads. At the Mumbai Podium 2026 event, Dr Sanjay Mukherjee, IAS, Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA explained the vision, the proposed connections and the currently under-construction routes. Dubbed Paatal Lok, the proposed network of tunnels aims to connect key parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, from Orange Gate to the Coastal Road, Thane to Borivali, and Goregaon to Mulund. The ambition is to ease through-traffic, offer commuters more routes across the city, and reduce pressure on existing roads. मुंबईतील स्थानिक वाहतूक आणि लांब पल्ल्याच्या वाहतुकीसाठी स्वतंत्र मार्गिका उपलब्ध करून देण्याच्या उद्देशाने तसेच वाहतूक कोंडी कमी करण्याच्या दृष्टीने भूमिगत शहरी बोगद्यांच्या माध्यमातून रस्त्यांचे एक नवे जाळे विकसित करण्यात येत आहे. मुंबई पोडियम 2026 या कार्यक्रमात डॉ. संजय मुखर्जी, भा. प्र. से., महानगर आयुक्त, एमएमआरडीए यांनी या महत्त्वाकांक्षी संकल्पनेमागील दृष्टिकोन, प्रस्तावित जोडमार्ग आणि सध्या बांधकाम सुरू असलेल्या बोगद्यांच्या मार्गांची माहिती दिली. ‘पाताळ लोक’ असे संबोधल्या जाणाऱ्या या प्रस्तावित भूमिगत शहरी बोगदा जाळ्यांद्वारे मुंबई महानगर प्रदेशातील महत्त्वाची ठिकाणे जोडण्याचे नियोजन आहे. यामध्ये ऑरेंज गेट ते कोस्टल रोड, ठाणे ते बोरिवली आणि गोरेगाव ते मुलुंड या मार्गांचा समावेश आहे. या प्रकल्पांचा मुख्य उद्देश शहरातून जाणाऱ्या लांब पल्ल्याच्या वाहतुकीसाठी पर्यायी मार्ग उपलब्ध करून देणे, प्रवाशांना शहराच्या विविध भागांत जाण्यासाठी अधिक पर्याय देणे आणि सध्याच्या रस्त्यांवरील वाहतुकीचा ताण कमी करणे हा आहे. @Dev_Fadnavis @mieknathshinde @DrSanMukherjee #MMRDA #MumbaiInMinutes #ReshapingMMR
