I just noticed I accidentally deleted these cuties ages ago.
I've been totally swamped with the details of my parents’ house renovations, so very little time for personal projects outside work—but soon!

Let's talk about the Pilotfish proof-of-concept by @Mysten_Labs, and why it's a big deal.
First, what is Pilotfish?
Pilotfish is a new Sui validator node architecture that enables horizontal elastic scaling. To understand what this means, it's important to understand what a validator even does. There are two ways to interact with a blockchain – read and write. Anyone can read the blockchain, but only validators can write (add a new block) to the blockchain. In order to write a block to a blockchain, validators must come together to decide what to include in the block – this process is known as "consensus".
Imagine this scenario...
A world-respected philosopher (e.g. @_smkotaro) is trying to capture his thoughts into writing. He's too extra so he don't want to do the writing himself because that's a job for peasants. So he hires a group of writers (e.g. @_StudioMirai interns) to listen to his rants, agree on what was sad, and commit his teachings to writing. In this example, Kotaro is the source of transactions, and the interns are the validators.
The problem here is as Kotaro gets more and more hyped up, he talks faster and faster... At the same time, the interns can only write so fast. There are two ways to solve this scaling problem – horizontally or vertically.
Vertical scaling involves scaling up resources. For a validator node operator, this means increasing CPU, RAM, storage, and network bandwidth. In Kotaro's situation, verticaly scaling would mean replacing the existing interns with interns who can write and communicate faster.
Unfortunately, one can only go so far with vertical scaling. Most high-performance blockchains recommend 32-64 CPU cores and 128-256GB of RAM for validator nodes, and the mainstream retail adoption wave hasn't even started yet. How far can we go with vertical scaling? Well, most server providers top out at 128-256 CPUs and 768GB-1TB of RAM. In many cases, bare metal servers with super high-end configurations like 128 CPUs/768GB RAM require 1-2 weeks of leadtime to provision. This is because in traditional application deployments, those configurations are only used for super niche use cases. Furthermore, the cost/core doesn't always scale up linearly ($1000 for 32 cores doesn't always mean $4000 for 128 cores). To understand why this is, look into "chip binning" and the economies of scale for silicon.
The TLDR; is that vertical scaling has a built-in hardware cap and is expensive to provision on-demand. In other words, a blockchain that only relies on vertical scaling is doomed.
Now let's talk about horizontal scaling (the approach that Mysten Labs/Sui is taking with Pilotfish). Instead of scaling up a single machine, horizontal scaling spreads a workload across multiple machines! In Kotaro's situation, this means each intern can hire a group of sub-interns to keep up with Kotaro's rants.
For validators, Pilotfish makes it possible to spin up additional servers on-demand. For example, if a new consumer dApp launches and suddenly receives a huge influx of traffic, validators can instantly spin up more machines on a cloud provider like AWS or GCP to keep up with the demand. When the initial traffic dies down, validators can get rid of the additional machines – this isn't practical in vertical scaling environments.
If the dApp consistently receives high levels of traffic, validators can make plans to transition from temporary cloud-based machines to longer-term bare metal machines which are slower to bring online, but provide a better performance/cost ratio. Another advantage of horizontal scaling is that it lets validators use "off the shelf" server configurations. So if network traffic requires 128 CPU cores, Pilotfish let's validators distribute load across 4x 32-core CPU machines instead of a single 128-core machine. 32-core CPU machines are more "general purpose" in nature and are typically cheaper per core and are faster to purchase and bring online.
At the end of the day, infrastructure scaling is mostly a solved problem. It's not a coincidence that the biggest consumer apps in the world (Facebook, Netflix, etc.) all make use of horizontal scaling. If the biggest Web2 consumer apps are using horizontal scaling, why in the world would anyone want to use or build on a blockchain that isn't built to scale horizontally?
In summary, Pilotfish and horizontal scaling gives @SuiNetwork the following advantages:
- Validators have the ability to operate infrastructure more efficiently and elastically with general-purpose hardware versus super high-end niche hardware.
- Thanks to Sui's object-centric architecture where smart contract packages are addresses as individual objects, horizontal scaling also allows for interesting things like package-specific priority markets for workers and package-specific fee markets.
- A clear road to consumer adoption. We still haven't seen a breakout crypto-powered app so far, but it's coming. Horizontally-scalable blockchains like Sui are the only chains that will be able to handle consumer-level traffic.
At @_StudioMirai, we are busy building the next-generation of consumer apps on Sui. The fact that the Mysten Labs teams is already exploring horizontal scaling just further convinces that Sui is the best place to do what we want to do.
