Why? Pay the money. The delay is ridiculous. #PostOfficeScandal
SHE DIED WAITING
Heather Earley, mother of three, has died waiting for her money. @PostOffice kept her waiting so long she ran out of time. Impressive logistics.
Lawyer @SimonMGoldberg (well worth to give him a follow) shared the sad news today.
Heather Earley was one of 555 postmasters who took the Post Office to the High Court and won, and she died before getting her redress, the money owed to put her life back together.
He points to a @BBCNews article from 2024 on victims who died before getting redress. Winning in court and never seeing the money is a rare talent.
Heather Earley was a mother of three who ran a local shop with a Post Office counter in Mossley, Newtownabbey, in Northern Ireland. In December 2013 the Horizon computer system said she was £10,000 short. A computer said so, and in the Post Office computers are never wrong..
She says one customer kept using a flaw in the system. Every time that customer withdrew £100, the system added £100 to the balance instead of taking it off. I wish my bank worked like that.
Heather Earley called the police, and the customer was prosecuted and convicted. That put the blame on the customer, and the Post Office still demanded the £10,000 from her, took money from her wages and refused to give it back even after the conviction. Crime solved, victim billed ...
She borrowed from family and maxed out three credit cards just to buy stock for the shop. She cashed in £50,000 of her pension to save the house and clear her debts. Her village lost its post office and its shop, a truly generous service to the community.
In 2019 the Post Office settled the group case for £57.75M. Around £46M went on legal and funding costs, which left roughly £20,000 for each of the 555 people. The judge, Mr Justice Peter Fraser, had said the Post Office at times acted as though it answered only to itself, and it seems to have taken that as a challenge.
Reports say at least 350 Horizon victims have died before their final payouts, so at this pace the scheme will finish the moment nobody is left to be paid.
Heather Earley wanted justice and enough money to rebuild what was left of her life. Simon Goldberg says the lawyers and other parties who held up and nickel and dimed her redress should feel nothing but shame, though shame does not appear to be billable. Stop fighting these people and pay them before it is too late.
Heather Earley never got her cheque.
RIP Heather
How can you remain silent @andyburnham ? IBCA leaders paid performance bonuses for failure and death without justice! Staff should never profit from state caused death. Bonus payouts will be greater than compensation to Affected people over 7+years. A National Disgrace!

A wall of legally and politically excused fraud is *still* stopping so many #PostOfficeScandal victims being compensated, clocking up expenses waiting for them to die, and nobody can pretend otherwise with a straight face.
@CastletonLee Thank you, Lee. £17.6m in legal costs to compensate 111 postmasters the courts had already cleared. That's about £158,500 each in fees.
Every pound of it is public money.
Heather died waiting. Pay the victims first.
@ArturNadol7566 @PostOffice @SimonMGoldberg I'm sickened that the victims of the #PostOfficeScandal are being treated the same way as #Thalidomide and #TaintedBloodScandal families 😡 @FujitsuOfficial are stalling until they sadly ☠️
@andyburnham make them pay up IN FULL
It's disgusting how long this has gone on
@ArturNadol7566 @JenMeads @PostOffice @SimonMGoldberg This is an horrific injustice.
Just like the #ContaminatedBloodScandal - families are watching their loved ones die waiting for their compensation to come through.
It’s just not good enough.

#postofficescandal Bless her. "Something is rotten in the state of..." Corporate Tech giants have become unaccountable in law. Too many tricks and dodges. The cynicism, the incompetence, the passing of the buck, the wilful obfuscation, the cruelty, cowardice, cupidity and greed. In short, the continuing wickedness.
Heartbreaking.
Terrible news.
@andyburnham Prime Minister, even though unelected, you have the power to get this sorted, so that not one more person connected with this shocking scandal is driven to this. Let this be your legacy, if nothing else.
@EdwardJDavey You must be very proud.

Heartbreaking.
Terrible news.
It’s heartbreaking.
Nothing is so complex that it should take decent honest people so long to be put back to the position they should have been in.
Well, unless the wrongdoers are purposefully making sure it is not being allowed to happen.
This is very sad news! The lengths the Post Office and its paymasters have handled - and still - handling compensation is nothing short of ruthless. The same ruthlessness which was handed down to innocent victims of the #PostOfficeScandal
@andyburnham @biztradegovuk @UKParliament @SkyNews @BBCEmmaSimpson Unfortunately we have lost another subpostmaster without full & fair redress. Devastated. The stress of fighting & fighting & getting nowhere takes its toll on the body. RIP Heather xxx

followers, if you haven't heard Jayakanthan's story then please read. It's gut wrenching. His wife needs Justice and compensated. How can we help her?
AUDITED TO DEATH
Jayakanthan Sivasubramaniam took his life hours after auditors raided his branch. @PostOffice has been so sorry about it that it refused his widow a penny.
Jayakanthan was 35 and a father of two. He ran three convenience stores in south west London and had recently taken on a Post Office branch in Putney. In March 2005, Post Office investigators raided that branch in what the company calls an audit, and he took his own life a few hours later !!!
His wife, Gowri Sivasubramaniam, had taken their two children to a family birthday party. She came home and found him.
Gowri says two investigators took files from the store and locked her husband out that day, according to her account to MPs on the Business Committee.
Post Office said £180,000 had gone missing from the cash machine and the safe. @itvnews correspondent John Ray reported in April 2024 that there is no proof of what happened to that money, only unanswered questions, which is a lot of accounting for something that cannot be accounted for.
Speaking publicly for the first time, Gowri told ITV News she believes Post Office is to blame. She waited 20 years to say it, and Post Office is still working on its reply.
For anyone new to this, Horizon is the computer system Post Office used to record branch accounts, and it made money look missing that was not there. More than 700 branch managers were convicted on its data and the system was later found to be faulty. For years the company called it robust, which is a brave review for software that wrecked hundreds of lives.
Gowri says that in the weeks after he died, Post Office kept writing to her to chase the missing money.
She rebuilt her family's life, spent time in Sri Lanka and settled in Liverpool. When the Horizon scandal became public, she applied to the Horizon Shortfall Scheme in August 2020, which exists to compensate people hit by Horizon shortfalls. About 3 years later she got her answer, so nobody can say they rushed...
The answer was - NO.
A Post Office letter, reported by The Times @thetimes, said the contract was held by her husband's company, so the scheme does not extend to her claim.
The panel that decides these claims, which Post Office and the government describe as independent, said it had no reason to doubt that the audit had a profound impact on him and ended with him taking his own life ...
... It then said the discrepancies found at the audit could not, on the balance of probabilities, be presumed to be Horizon shortfalls. So the audit ended his life, and as far as the scheme is concerned, the audit does not count.
Nobody wrote that rejection by accident. A person chose every word and a person chose to send it to a widow. I assume customer satisfaction is through the roof.
Here is the SHOCKING (?!) part. According to ITV News, even Post Office accepts there is no Horizon transaction data for his branch and only limited relevant documents. A panel has therefore ruled on what a computer did with no data from that computer, which takes real confidence ...
Kevan Jones, then a Labour MP and now Lord Beamish, sits on the Horizon Compensation Advisory Board. He told ITV News Post Office has either destroyed or lost records and that the benefit of the doubt should go to the victim. Misplacing the evidence is a remarkable way to win an argument.
He also told The Times the case revealed a complete lack of compassion from Post Office and the panel, and he demanded that it be reopened. Compassion, it seems, was out of stock..
Then came a statement, which costs nothing and pays nothing. Post Office told ITV that every claim is assessed by an independent panel, that its offer can be disputed and re-examined, and that it is deeply sorry for the pain and suffering Horizon has brought to many people. It also recognises that the claim relates to truly tragic circumstances.
Read that statement slowly.
Post Office has cast Horizon as the only villain in this story, because Horizon shortfalls are the only thing the scheme pays for, and a computer makes a very convenient villain since it cannot answer back. The raid, the lock-out and the payment reminders never make it onto the form, which is handy for the people who sent them!
Then Post Office hands the verdict to a panel and calls that independence. Deciding what a computer did at a branch with no computer records is playing God, and even the real one would check the file first.
In a letter filed with the Post Office Horizon IT Inquiry @PostOffInquiry, a barrister acting for Gowri says the only known surviving document about her husband's case is the investigation report Post Office wrote in 2005. The barrister says Post Office accepts that the report points to a gap between the cash in the machine and the machine's printouts, which Post Office says is not related to Horizon. So the company is marking its own homework ...
In that letter, dated 5 September 2024, the barrister argues that cash machine accounting was known to be flawed, citing a 2013 report on Post Office fraud and compliance. The letter says Simon Recaldin of Post Office had asked Gowri for more information about where the audit shortfalls came from, almost 20 years after the event, and the barrister calls that utterly unrealistic. So finding the evidence is now the widow's job.
In July 2025, the chair of the Post Office Horizon IT Inquiry, Sir Wyn Williams, reported that at least 13 people are thought to have taken their own lives because of the scandal.
He criticised an unnecessarily adversarial attitude from Post Office and its advisers towards redress and called for close family members to be compensated. It took a public inquiry to suggest the families might be owed something...
Post Office is 100% owned by the government..

Another #PostOfficeScandal in the making? When will @andyburnham go after the real crooks, the wealthy who have the money and the power 2 hide their money away 2 avoid paying taxes? It’s like those & most MP’s want 2 make sure we don’t have one grain more of the crumbs we deserve
COMPUTER SAYS PAY
HMRC is set to get powers to take unpaid tax straight from people's bank accounts, @thetimes reports.
Postmasters were once told a computer proved they owed money. It didn't.
Who checks HMRC's figures before the money goes? @HMRCgovuk
Government will now investigate Post Office systems that came before Horizon. The CCRC has flagged 35 of them.
The policy was always the same: unexplained losses, postmaster pays. Report due spring. Many have waited decades.
