His criminal acquittal remains an important part of the record. So does the later HPCSA finding that he had committed professional misconduct, which was subsequently set aside on procedural grounds.
Basson’s latest legal challenge has also failed. In July 2026, the Gauteng High Court dismissed his application for leave to appeal after he sought to permanently halt the HPCSA disciplinary proceedings.

Among the poisons that Basson manufactured was the active ingredient in Mandrax, as well as Mandrax tablets, which during his period of service was Cape Town’s drug of choice and the stock-in-trade of gang leaders. According to Basson he was trying to use this drug as a crowd-control mechanism.
* 1998, Basson’s involvement in producing street drugs was revealed at a special hearing of the TRC.
* In 1999, Basson was arrested in a police trap after trying to sell 1000 Ecstasy tablets.
* In 2005 he was acquitted on 67 criminal charges linked to Project Coast, including the drug charges.
* In 2013 he was convicted during disciplinary proceedings of the Health Professions Council of South Africa for breaching the ethical standards expected of a medical practitioner, including in the production of Methaqualone (Mandrax). He appealed.
* In 2026, the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria refused Basson leave to appeal against a ruling that he must complete the HPCSA’s long-delayed disciplinary proceedings.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) notes with disgust the decision by AfriForum to host Wouter Basson for a sold-out event dedicated to his “personal account” of Project Coast. We are not surprised, if anything, AfriForum has simply become more honest about the politics that sit beneath its constructed image as a civic organisation.
Wouter Basson was the central figure in Project Coast, the apartheid regime’s clandestine chemical and biological warfare programme, established in 1981 and operated under conditions of extreme secrecy. The programme that focused substantially on the development of poisons and chemical substances intended for the assassination of people identified as “enemies” of the apartheid state.
This is the history AfriForum has chosen to place on a theatre stage. Basson became known as “Dr Death” because of the extraordinary nature of his work for the apartheid security establishment. He operated at the intersection of medicine, military intelligence and biological and chemical warfare, waging a systematic war against liberation movements and the Black majority. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) itself investigated Project Coast as part of the apartheid state’s chemical and biological warfare activities.
