The way the students wrecked the text and thought deeply about what they read blew my mind. The discussion was so deep and rich that we only made it through a few paragraphs. I think this activity would be more beneficial in small groups. #QuestioningStance

What surprised me? This question was posed to a class of 5th graders. To my surprise - they were able to verbalize the different types of surprises one can have while reading. After detailing the characteristics of nonfiction text we then labeled our surprises! #QuestioningStance

By defining the different types of surprises, the 5th grade students were more eager and excited to begin reading. They now have a purpose for reading and couldn’t wait to discuss their findings (which turned into an amazing debate). #QuestioningStance
