“We have four kids what the ___.” I catch myself saying this often as this wasn’t necessarily the plan. I knew I’d have kids but kept pushing it back. Women get yelled at about timelines, but we modern men aren’t much different. I wanted to travel more, write, and take steroids (true story). I had a breakout book. Monthly royalties direct deposited. Side businesses that I ran for years from a laptop on top of book money. Why stop the party? I have all the time in the world, right? I’m not big into doting over your significant other in public as it’s usually a sign of PROBLEMS. It also feels gross and exhibitionist, like you’re a swinger advertising yourself and your spouse to the world. “Look at us!” However I’ll say this much. You really don’t know who you’re with until children arrive. My wife more than rose to the passion, so we kept having more. Home births. Home school. She does it all. She’s been pregnant every year (we had one miscarriage) for almost a decade. You’re going to change a lot together. Not always good. You gotta watch for some stuff. After a couple of kids you sometimes feel like you’re roommates and ships passing in the night. Each person can blame the other based on archetype they hold on romantic love and whose duty it is to do what. This stuff gets really stupid and petty if you let it. Today I made it more of a big day than usual as we have daughters old enough to pay attention and they need to see what a healthy relationship looks like. Flowers, breakfast, thrifting, cruised around while kids napped in minivan, stopped to grab wild flowers by a trail, dinner, and then back to reality. Her feeding a newborn, baby boy napping on my chest and us wondering if we should let him fall asleep at 5 pm (will he sleep through the night or wake us up at 3 am ready to do his day?), me squeezing in some cardio, the girls wanting attention so me giving them exercise to do.
