Seems even the most seasoned psychiatrists need an immersive course in #RecoveryLanguage. Discrimination is stronger within the field of #Mentalhealth than outside it--despite #StigmaFree campaigns. This from those responsible to set the tone for public to follow. 🤔

"Irrational", "Nutty", "Weird", "Howling at the moon" This from an American psychiatrist whose profession always cry "stigma" when such terms are used to describe 'mental illness'. This is the fundamental flaw of this profession. They cannot have it both ways.

Language choice often goes further in creating a #recovery #environment than medical treatment. When a person feels recognized as worthy, valid & human, they're more likely to feel empowered to make good choices. Treat one another as you'd wish to be treated. #RecoveryLanguage

Can we please think about the language we use in research. This report describes ways in which *schizophrenic patients* can *fail* at their antipsychotics. These people have not failed. @TheLancetPsych do you have systems for reviewing/improving the language of reports published?

Use people-first language. I.E., refer to a 'person who uses substances', or 'a person who has a substance use disorder'; and not a drug user, addict or alcoholic. This is more neutral language that helps to maintain the individuality of the person. #RecoveryLanguage #WordsMatter
