We report the latest article by @GabrieleIuvina1 and @iuvinale_n titled “Red Mike exploits vulnerable Cisco devices: a threat to national security” posted at @Cybersec360.
According to a recent report by U.S. cybersecurity firm Recorded Future, Salt Typhoon compromised Cisco network devices used by a U.S.-based affiliate, those traceable to telecommunications providers in the United Kingdom and South Africa, as well as deployed in Italy and Thailand.
Seven Cisco devices associated with these companies communicated with the Chinese hackers.
The group, whose hacking activities have affected the highest levels of the U.S. government, between December 2024 and January 2025 attempted to exploit more than a thousand network devices from the technology giant Cisco, using “privilege escalation vulnerabilities CVE- 2023-20198 and CVE-2023-20273 to compromise [...] unpatched devices running Cisco IOS XE software.”
“Unpatched public-facing devices are direct access points to an organization's infrastructure,” Recorded Future points out. Over the past five years, sophisticated Chinese threat groups have moved toward exploiting these devices to gain initial access.
RedMike's exploitation of telecommunications infrastructure, however, goes beyond technical vulnerabilities and poses a strategic intelligence threat. Persistent access to critical communication networks enables state-backed threat actors to monitor classified conversations, manipulate data flows, and disrupt services during geopolitical conflicts. “The fact that RedMike has targeted legal wiretapping programs and U.S. political figures highlights the strategic intelligence objectives behind these operations and the national security threat they pose.”

Between Dec 2024 and Jan 2025, Insikt Group uncovered a global cyber campaign (#RedMike/#SaltTyphoon) targeting over 1,000 Cisco network devices, affecting major telecom providers in the US, UK, and South Africa.
RedMike used CVE-2023-20198 & CVE-2023-20273 to gain access via Cisco IOS XE software, enabling data interception & network manipulation. The US Treasury sanctioned Sichuan Juxinhe Network Technology, citing their role in RedMike’s operations.
What organizations can do:
