Hanglalmuan Vaiphei, a 21-year-old college student was arrested for a social media post criticising the state chief minister on April 30, he was allegedly killed while in police custody.
His family said they were informed of his death on May 5th. They said the police told them that their son was beaten to death by a Meitei mob while being taken to prison from court.
The family said that they registered a case of custodial killing early in May, but have not received any calls from the police. Their son's body is yet to be returned to them, they added.
"We have been talking about such incidents from the time the violence started. Nobody listened to us. The Manipur state turned its back on our community much before May 3," Kimmoi Lhouvum, a social activist from Kangpokpi, told AI Jazeera.
"Justice no longer exists for us. We have been dehumanised to an extent where there is no going back."
