On May 27, 2026, Uganda closed its border with Congo to protect its population from Ebola. The same week, on May 30, 2026, a commercial operator is running a webinar, marketing Uganda to foreign clients as a low-cost surrogacy destination, selling Ugandan women as surrogates to carry pregnancies for wealthy foreign buyers. This is not the first time we have seen this. In Ukraine, ‘one of the most affordable surrogacy destinations’, first COVID and then war struck: babies in bomb shelters, surrogate mothers left alone and unable to flee Uganda has 189 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births. Its health workers are leaving public hospitals for private fertility clinics. Its parliament has left the HART Bill in harmonisation limbo for 14 months. ACRC Global has just published its report, "Surrogacy Statistics 2026." The global surrogacy market is projected to reach $28.91 billion by 2026. Projected annual growth: 22%. The Asia-Pacific region is identified as the "fastest-growing market". CAGR, market value, cost breakdown... this rhetoric isn't neutral; these are the financial markets' very own words. The report devotes an entire section to "success rates". Live birth rates per embryo transfer. Successful transfer rates per agency. Growth rates by region. Nowhere is the word "complication" mentioned. Nowhere is the word "trauma" mentioned. Nowhere is the name of a single country of origin for surrogate mothers mentioned. This isn't an accidental oversight. A report on surrogacy that doesn't mention the woman giving birth to the child a single time, except as a cost factor, really speaks volumes. And one last thing, the figures the industry doesn't release: 2 to 3 times more obstetric complications among surrogate mothers (BMJ 2024). 67% psychological sequelae (Jadva et al., reproduced in 2021).
