#Tianwen3 (Chinese: 天問三號 / 天问三号) is a planned substrate collection #mission of the #Chinese National #SpaceAdministration. An orbiter with a #returncapsule and a #lander with mobile and stationary sample collection devices is scheduled to be launched to Mars in 2028 by two launch vehicles.
It is a spectacular concept to get #substrate #samples from #Mars back to earth, which would make #China to the first nation to have access to this material. The #composition of #Martian #soil (#regolith) usually is a #witness for all #geological and (just in case of their existence) #biological processes over long periods of time. For me, only the question arises, when manned missions to Mars are expected to happen as early as possible. May be in not too far time distance to 2031.

By 2031, Beijing hopes to drop a sealed capsule of Martian dust and stone onto Earth — about 500 grams of another world. If Tianwen-3 stays on schedule, China would become the first nation to return material from the surface of Mars, while U.S. sample-return plans remain uncertain.
The scientific bet is as bold as the engineering. Mission chief scientist Hou Zengqian has put the search for life at the top of the list: not just Earth-like microbes, but any biosignature that might have formed in Mars’s own strange evolutionary story. Even a negative result would still be gold. Microscopic, molecular, and isotopic analysis of rocks that formed under different gravity, chemistry, and climate could rewrite the planet’s geological history and its once-habitable past. The lander is designed to drill as deep as two meters, reaching material better shielded from radiation and oxidation than the scorched surface.
The choreography is brutal. Two Long March 5 rockets are slated to leave Wenchang on Hainan in the late-2028 launch window. One carries the lander and ascent vehicle; the other, the orbiter and Earth-return craft. After touchdown, a lander with a drill and robotic arms would collect surface scoops and subsurface cores. A small rocket would then fire the sample canister into Martian orbit, where the waiting spacecraft would snatch it and begin the long trip home. Hardware has already moved into flight-prototype manufacturing, Hou says, and the remaining technical risks are being worked through one by one.
Where to land may decide everything. A final site is due by the end of 2026. Teams have already narrowed a vast list to eight candidates, scoring them for rock age, ancient water, the chance that biosignatures survived, and whether a spacecraft can land and take off safely. In parallel, China is building a finer geological map of the entire planet so the scientific payoff is less of a gamble.
Then comes the quietest, most careful part. A specialized planetary-protection laboratory is being prepared so Earth life does not contaminate the samples — and so nothing from Mars contaminates Earth. If the capsule really does come home in 2031, the first handful of another planet will not just be a trophy. It will be a question, sealed in glass, waiting to be asked in a lab

At an altitude of about 20,000m, the return capsule transitioned into parachute-deployment posture. Upon reaching around 10,000m altitude, it deployed the parachute system to execute final deceleration while maintaining stable attitude.
