Little tsar, Shoigu and Gerasimov have managed to lose somewhere between 4k (Oryx @WarSpotting and 11k tanks during the war. Blend of estimates place the number around 7k. Context? Most tank losses suffered by an army post WW2: by a country mile. More importantly, one of Russia's BIG advantages when the war began was kit (tanks, arty, air). All three have been relatively neutralized (except air glide bombs). A historic achievement - to enter a war with a tremendous advantage in kit - and fail to win, significantly hurt your economy and expand the alliance (NATO) against you. So, why hasn't Russia geared up tank production since the war began? Many reasons. Tweet below from @EuromaidanPress dabbles in part of the Russian problem. Been some chatter that Russian (unconfirmed) has ramped up production to around 300 a year (plus the ~600 old rusty crapola they manage to refurbish). More context? During WW2, Russia pumped out around 90k tanks (65k t34s!). Given rates of destruction (and they have slowed and will slow since Russia will maintain some minimal reserve unless the state collapses), likely a few thousand t80s, t72s remain; a shadow of what Russia began war with. @WarSpotting pegs t55,t62,t70 losses as a percentage of all tank loss now at 75% - with a dramatic increase in the percentage from t55s and t62s (37%!). I cut the data from @WarSpotting a little differently - chart below. I was interested in how old is Russian (tank) kit? (as defined as when where the tank models designed). 50 years (avg year it was designed & first introduced was 1974). Was also interested in seeing how tank model losses by stage of war (the mix). Looks like we're seeing a big decline in T72s and a spike in T62 use (even some T54/55s!) since the Russian debacle in Kharkiv oblast during the spring and Ukrainian Kursk offensive. As an aside, the Javelin anti tank weapon designed in 1989 - produced in 1996. A few tank reference points - when designed/introduced: 1) Leopard 2 (Germany): 1979 2) Merkava (Israel): 1979 3) M1 Abrams (USA): 1980 4) Type 99 (China): 2001 5) K2 Black Panther (SK): 2013 All tanks here designed/first introduced prior to the Age of Drones.

Update chart regarding Russian tank losses (the mix of models) by @verekerrichard1 : always interesting to see that/his data (quoted tweet below).

I cut the data from @WarSpotting a little differently - chart below. I was interested in how old is Russian (tank) kit? (as defined as when where the tank models designed). 50 years (avg year it was designed & first introduced was 1974). Was also interested in seeing how tank model losses by stage of war (the mix). Looks like we're seeing a big decline in T72s and a spike in T62 use (even some T54/55s!) since the Russian debacle in Kharkiv oblast during the spring and Ukrainian Kursk offensive.

As an aside, the Javelin anti tank weapon designed in 1989 - produced in 1996.

A few tank reference points - when designed/introduced:

1) Leopard 2 (Germany): 1979
2) Merkava (Israel): 1979
3) M1 Abrams (USA): 1980
4) Type 99 (China): 2001
5) K2 Black Panther (SK): 2013

All tanks here designed/first introduced prior to the Age of Drones.

9) A different ratio I look at is the ratio of tank losses to IFV losses, Russia has lost about 2 IFVs for every tank it lost for most of the war, but over the summer it changed to over 3 IFVs for each tank, where it now stays. This could be more IFVs or relatively fewer tanks, I don't know but I don't think it's IFVs.

Interesting tweet below: a tank storage base now tapped out. It's safe to say, what Russian tanks remain in storage after 3 years of war are likely of pretty low quality - assuming they work at all (Russia doesn't do the maintenance thing).

What tank army doing? Loosing tanks. Finally got there - a Russian tank storage base without tanks. According to latest sat imagery tanks here today stand at 0, down from 324 pre war. BMPs and other AFVs stand today at 27, down from 399 pre war. These guys do great research.
