Jose Garcia, Kemonte Rice, and Cortez Harris trace a line back to one courtroom: Judge Ankur Srivastava’s. Srivastava let Garcia walk twice on electronic monitoring; within twelve hours the man was smashing a stranger’s skull with a hunk of concrete in the West Loop. A month later, prosecutors begged to detain Rice on fresh rape and gun charges; Srivastava waved them off and fitted him with an ankle monitor instead. Consequently, Rice’s 13 year-old nephew died after being allowed by Rice to play with a gun. And in 2023, Srivastava set hardened gun felon Cortez Harris free for $100; Harris soon opened fire on two people while still on bail. This is judicial negligence measured in broken bones, spilled blood, and a child’s coffin. Public safety is the first duty of the bench, and Srivastava’s pattern of reckless leniency proves he can't or will not meet it. Chicago can't afford another concrete beating, another street shooting, another dead child handed to us by this judge’s misguided mercy.
