Long-term Effects of COVID-19 on the Female Reproductive System
In my last post, I wrote about m the effects of COVID-19 on the reproductive systems of the female and male population. After more research, I found much more information and what does it break it down into a post for each group
The long-term effects of COVID-19 on the female reproductive system, including the ovaries and other systems, have been a subject of extensive research. The findings indicate a range of potential impacts, though the evidence is still evolving. Here is a detailed summary based on the current literature:
Ovarian Health and Function
Ovarian Reserve and Function
- Ovarian Injury: COVID-19 may cause direct damage to ovarian follicles, leading to a decreased ovarian reserve and hormone disturbances. This can result in diminished ovarian reserve and reduced reproductive potential in the short term[6][16].
- Hormonal Changes: Studies have shown that COVID-19 can affect sex hormone levels, including anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), estradiol, progesterone, and testosterone. These changes can reflect ovarian function and potential injury[2][6][14].
- ACE2 Receptor: The virus uses the ACE2 receptor to enter cells, which is expressed in the ovaries, uterus, vagina, and placenta. This suggests that the reproductive system could be a target for the virus, potentially leading to disruptions in ovarian function and fertility[19][20].
Menstrual Cycle
- Menstrual Disturbances: Many women have reported changes in their menstrual cycles, including irregular periods, heavier bleeding, and changes in cycle length. These disturbances are thought to be related to the stress of the pandemic, hormonal changes, and the direct effects of the virus[4][8][15].
- Long COVID: Women with Long COVID have reported higher rates of menstrual disturbances, including dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea, and oligomenorrhea. These symptoms can be exacerbated by the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and menopause[1][5].
Fertility and Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART)
- Fertility: There is evidence suggesting that COVID-19 can impact female fertility by affecting ovarian reserve and hormone levels. However, some studies have found no significant differences in fertility outcomes between women with and without a history of COVID-19 infection[2][3][13].
- ART Outcomes: Studies on ART outcomes have shown mixed results. Some research indicates that COVID-19 does not significantly affect the quality of oocytes, embryos, or pregnancy rates in ART procedures, while other studies suggest potential negative impacts[3][8][13].
Pregnancy and Menopause
- Pregnancy Complications: COVID-19 infection during pregnancy has been associated with more severe disease and adverse pregnancy outcomes, such as preeclampsia, preterm birth, and maternal mortality[1][4].
- Menopause: The virus may exacerbate symptoms of menopause in women who are already perimenopausal, potentially due to disruptions in ovarian steroid hormone production[4].
Research Gaps and Future Directions
- Need for Longitudinal Studies: There is a need for more long-term studies to fully understand the impact of COVID-19 on female reproductive health, including larger cohort studies and long-term follow-up of recovered patients[6][16].
- Impact of Vaccination: The effects of COVID-19 vaccination on female reproductive health are still being studied, with most evidence suggesting that any menstrual disturbances are short-term and reversible[10][14].
In conclusion, while there is evidence that COVID-19 can impact the female reproductive system, including the ovaries, menstrual cycle, and fertility, the long-term effects are still being investigated. More research is needed to fully understand these impacts and to develop appropriate healthcare strategies for affected women.

Over 64 million people worldwide suffer from #LongCovid and around 34 million from #MECFS.
The quality of life and life expectancy of those affected is very low.
Nevertheless, the #NIH provides hardly any funding for research into the disease.
