Unlike most amphibians, red-backed salamanders practice some parental care. Females aggressively defend eggs against predators and neighbors. There are even some records of post-hatching attendance of offspring, like this rare find at a Western MA #SPARCnet site in 2017!

Richmond, VA is at the southern edge of the range of eastern red-backed salamanders, but don't let that catch you off guard - it has some of the highest salamander densities we have seen in #SPARCnet! Six sallies under one board is just a normal day in RVA!

Dr. Tanya Matlaga and students at Susquehanna University had a successful field day last week. They kept busy measuring 48 salamanders in 3 plots, including two boards with three salamanders each & one individual with a forked tail! This can happen when tails regrow #SPARCnet

Bridgewater State had their first #SPARCnet field day this past Friday. It's been dry in MA, so only six #salamanders: one was a recap first spotted in April 2018, and another was a teeny baby clocking in at 0.04 grams! Also spotted: five baby garter #snakes!

Are you enjoying the cooler weather? #SPARCnet salamanders sure are! PhD candidate Maisie MacKnight at Penn State kicked off the fall field season with this lovely female red-back, nearly 2 grams with 16 eggs! This is a good sign for the population and a successful field season!

We had a BLAST spending the day at McCabe Forest with Harris Center Naturalist, Karen Rent! Students worked together to set up a #SPARCnet site to monitor salamander populations. We will return to the site six times a year and send data to scientists at Penn State. #weareconval
