Professor Alf Baird speaking at the #SSRGConference2026 in Dunfermline, 16 October 2026. Asked to speak on the SNP and its future, he set out what postcolonial theory says happens to a national party in a colonised territory, why Scotland is that territory, and where liberation comes from instead. His argument, in his own words, in the order he made it. WHERE SCOTLAND STANDS 2:23:54 “My research in the last several years has been to do with postcolonial theory. Postcolonial theory tells us really what happens in a territory in self-determination conflict. And that’s what we are, a territory in self-determination conflict.” WHAT HAPPENS TO THE NATIONAL PARTY 2:24:49 “The National Party makes an accommodation with the colonial power. It becomes part of the racket. It builds up its pensions. It passes laws that mystify the people. Its main purpose is to delay independence, to take the people and the movement up a blind alley.” 2:26:21 “The national party becomes an implement of coercion. It does the dirty work of the colonial power. It holds back the movement. It holds back the radicals. And remember this: independence is radical. If you’re not radical, you’re not about independence. You’re about something else.” INDEPENDENCE & LIBERATION MOVEMENTS 2:25:55 “The independence movement depends on the political and legal structures of the colonial power. The liberation movement does not. The liberation movement looks towards international law. A alternative vision was offered during the #SSRGConference2026. A new PSB no TV licence but funded via a mobile phone and broadband levy. The BBC Scotland Channel helped remove STV2.

The BBC set up BBC Scotland to fail. Its best and most popular programmes were shown also on BBC1 or 2 Scotland while Scotland football internationals were also on BBC 1 or 2. There was no attempt to build an audience. Plus the awful biased news coverage. They succeeded.
