This #sadham crap made me mad, so I wrote about it. Short story: most of us would rather help you than complain about you. Don't paint the entire #AmateurRadio community with the same brush just because of the bitchings of a few grumpy old men.
Ok, I've seen enough of this #sadham crap and I feel compelled to respond to it. For those of you who don't know, there is a hyper-militant group of #HamRadio operators who are giving civilian disaster responders crap for unlicensed operation in the areas affected by Helene - threatening to report, lecturing, etc...
THIS IS NOT HELPFUL!
Yes, we're licensed/certified and we should be wary of unlicensed operators in our space, but for the love of RF this is a unique situation. It at least appears that there's been a failure at the US federal level to provide any meaningful support for victims of this disaster (colour me surprised) and it's regular people going in and doing the heavy lifting. Lecturing these people (many of whom are already anti-establishment for reasons that I can understand) that they need a license to help people in need is quite possibly the dumbest take I can think of.
As a community, we should be providing advice on how they can effectively communicate in such a harsh environment. It look like they're all using $50 Baofengs and MURS radios, so let's help them make a comms plan - maybe find a spare 2m repeater they can put on a shared-non-protected pair on the top of a hill somewhere so they can cover a greater distance and justify it as unlicensed operation in a time of disaster when lives are at stake - it's not us risking prosecution (and I doubt the FCC would dare) and maybe, just maybe, it would build a bridge to a previously untapped group of people who might be an asset to the hobby.
It would be very, very helpful if certain members of our community would think about the impact of their speech and actions - especially since we are generally perceived, however unfairly (or is it?), as a group of old men who have nothing better to do than complain about "lids, kids and space cadets."
To anyone who is providing civilian aid to victims of Helene, and to those who might have to jump into the fray to help out those affected by Milton: I am the outgoing president of Canada's national organization, @RACTWEETS, which is our equivalent to your @arrl. I have been an #AmateurRadio operator for 30 years, having gotten my ticket at the age of 14. I firmly believe that the vast majority of us would rather help you in your invaluable efforts than quote regulations to you. If there is anything the community can do for you, I encourage you to contact me and I'll direct you to those who are is a position to provide help.
