You may know that Windermere is dying. But footage of the algal blooms must be seen to be believed.

Today, we are a significant step closer to ensuring Windermere is protected for future generations. This is a truly historic moment for our lake. Over the last four years, our grassroots movement has highlighted the challenges facing our lake, and today, we have succeeded in bringing the government and all essential stakeholders together around a single, shared ambition: to end sewage pollution in Windermere once and for all.
Speaking on the shores of the lake, Environment Minister Steve Reed made a groundbreaking commitment:
“The government has pledged to work with us and local partners to eliminate all sewage discharges into Windermere.”
This milestone wouldn’t have been possible without you. To our supporters, volunteers, businesses, and organisations who stood with us—thank you. We also acknowledge the leadership of United Utilities CEO Louise Beardmore and Environment Agency Area Director Carol Holt, who have worked with us in recent months to make today’s announcement possible.
But let’s be clear—this is not the end.
While today’s announcement is a breakthrough, it is still just a promise. Nothing is legally binding, and we won’t let this urgent issue be kicked into the long grass. We must keep up the pressure until these words turn into real, cast-iron commitments.
We need you now more than ever. Stay with us. Support the fight. Help us secure a sewage-free Windermere.
Together, we can make Windermere the cleanest lake in the country—preserving its beauty for generations to come.
It’s time to stop the sewage. It’s time to Save Windermere.
It's the tireless work from campaigners, like @MattStaniek & @WindrushWasp, who are exposing the #lawbreaking polluters.
Where's the government action??😡 #SaveWindermere

In a monumental victory for Save Windermere, United Utilities (UU) has withdrawn their appeals to the First-Tier Tribunal, where they argued that the Information Commissioner (ICO) was wrong in in their decision telling them to release environmental information to the campaign. They have also subsequently released the environmental data they had been fighting to withhold from the public.
Save Windermere, as a second respondent in this case, worked tirelessly alongside esteemed barristers Nicholas Ostrowski and Samual Glanville, who provided pro-bono work on this case.
Since the decision, United Utilities has communicated readily with the campaign. In addition to releasing the appeal information, they have also provided a significant amount of additional data we had previously requested. We commend this new approach by UU and the leadership decisions that led to this increased transparency about how their activities impact England's largest lake.
While we are encouraged by this outcome, we cannot ignore that it took years of persistent campaigning to achieve it, including countless complaints to the ICO, news articles and national media coverage and even the imposition of a special enforcement measure on United Utilities by the ICO – the foundations for which were laid by Save Windermere – making them the first water company in the UK to receive one.
We hope United Utilities will continue this newfound commitment to transparency and make strides in collecting more comprehensive data to fully assess their impact on Windermere. Should the need arise, Save Windermere will not hesitate to fight for transparency again.

It was great to join @MattStaniek for Week 59 of the Strike Against Sewage and finally see the delightful poo hats in real life! It was also great to speak to dedicated community members who remain relentless in their campaign to #StopTheSewage #SaveWindermere
Week 59 of the Strike Against Sewage
With just a week until Christmas, the festive spirit is making its way to the strike! The standout today is the simple ask: All we want for Christmas is no poo in Windermere. I wonder if @MariahCarey would consider a rewrite?
As you may or may not know, this week OFWAT will announce how much water companies can raise your bills to clean up their mess. While investment in Windermere is urgently needed, the key issue for us is this: people shouldn’t have to pay twice for a service they’ve already paid for. Instead, shareholders need to step up and do what they’ve failed to do since privatisation—invest in infrastructure, rather than extracting profits from the companies.
The key example of where customers shouldn’t foot the bill is ensuring sites spilling illegally are brought into compliance with their permits at a minimum. To reiterate what we have worked alongside @watervole3 from @WindrushWasp to expose: in recent years, Professor Hammond has demonstrated that all six of United Utilities’ untreated sewage spilling sites around Windermere have discharged illegally. OFWAT’s own guidance states: “We [OFWAT] do not expect customers to pay to regain compliance with existing permit conditions.”
This distinction is crucial. The necessary investments to address the issues we are seeing in Windermere must be made, but the question is: should the cost be borne by the bill-payer or the shareholder? We’ve submitted evidence of these violations to OFWAT and will be watching closely as the decisions unfold.

We’ll keep you updated as pay-day approaches!

Beautiful light on Windermere this evening 💙🧡 At least you can’t see the s**t @unitedutilities put in here in this light 🤬 #savewindermere @MattStaniek @Feargal_Sharkey @carolvorders

The @MarchforWater was an incredible opportunity to meet other activists.
A highlight was meeting @MattStaniek
I was able to tell him that the #Savewindermere shorts I had bought were a great fit!
@MattStaniek is an outstanding campaigner. He stands between @unitedutilities and our countries most iconic lake - a jewel in its crown.
Thank you for all your doing Matt and for the fabulous shorts!

“This is not just about Windermere…If a place of such national and international significance can be so ruthlessly violated then what waterbody is free from this exploitation?… Our lakes, our seas and our rivers are being destroyed” @MattStaniek #savewindermere @MarchforWater
It was a real privilege to speak today at the @MarchforWater

🚨 Breaking News 🚨
Save Windermere has once again been involved in exposing United Utilities exploitation of Windermere. Today the BBC reported that in the last 3 years, United Utilities has ILLEGALLY dumped 143,000,000 litres of untreated sewage directly into Windermere from just one of their sites — that’s thethe equivalent of 23 million toilet flushes, 1,600 double-decker buses, or enough to fill Big Ben 30 times! 💩
According to the BBC, United Utilities claims they reported these incidents at Glebe Road Pumping Station as soon as they were aware, which suggests they simply didn’t know about the instances of illegality from 2021 to September 2023, despite it being their statutory obligation to show permit compliance. The BBC estimates an additional 24 incidents that weren’t reported at the time could have cost the company £2.5 million through lower rewards or greater penalties.
You might be thinking, where’s the Environment Agency? Isn’t this their job? Well, once again, they’ve turned a blind eye. They’ve failed to ask for the data, failed to hold United Utilities accountable and failed to protect Windermere from this predatory behaviour.
We need your help to stop this 🫵

Let’s try and get this trending. Keir Starmer has often spoken about his love for the Lake District. Now it’s time for him to put his money where his mouth is and end sewage pollution in Windermere once and for all. Windermere is a symbol of our cultural heritage, a key driver of the local and national economy, and a sanctuary for rare and protected wildlife. This is a national and international disgrace, one of the country’s greatest natural treasures is being exploited by the multi-billion pound private water company. It’s time for Westminster to act.
@Keir_Starmer , it’s time to stop the sewage to Save Windermere.
