Thanks @ProfJGrey we will take good care of her. Can’t wait to get going with the #SearchForSmelt this year. We will be tagging 50 smelt and monitoring their migration upstream through the Wyre Marine Conservation Zone next Spring. #CucumberFish

New chapter. My faithful research vessel 'Ferox' started life tracing organotins in the #NorfolkBroads @QM_SBCS. Then with @LancsUniLEC @CEHLakeEcoGrp studying #INNS #foodweb impacts for @WinSci #Windermere Now, #SearchForSmelt with new skipper @TM_WRT Fare well and adieu....

So, after our first week of intensive fyke netting for smelt we are still cucumber fish-less. Mightily frustrating - Still remain hopeful River temps rising and big spring tides on the horizon. On a bright note first salmon and S/trout smolt & parr. #SearchForSmelt

Finally something of note from our Fyke nets, not the intended quarry but 7 species including salmon and sea trout smolt, chub, eel, flounder, roach and stickleback. Nets out all week in the hope that large Spring tides bring smelt with them. #SearchForSmelt

Jack, our Intern working on the 'Saving the Sparling' project, is very happy because we've been successful in our attempts to catch #sparling over the past few days! #SearchforSmelt #smelt 🐟🥒

@ArtNiven @TM_WRT Still no #sparling action over this way. Keeping a keen eye on the situation as the degree days start to build up! 🐟🥒#SearchforSmelt

@ArtNiven @TM_WRT Yeah, we ususally see a build up to the springs but have seen no evidence of them yet - apart from a few predators! #GoodLuck in your netting exploits and finding their spawning locations! Luckily we know the Cree ones pretty well!🐟🥒#SearchforSmelt #Sparling

@ArtNiven @Galloway_FT We caught smelt in the estuary in Oct&Nov 2017. Started fyke netting this week for them, nothing showing other than sticklebacks. Not surprising with the cold weather. Will continue into April over spring tides. #SearchForSmelt

A successful night for the #SearchForSmelt as we caught 16 smelt in the Wyre estuary. All in super condition and released successfully. Plenty of other species including eel (yellow), bass and pipefish. Elated. Thanks to @mjhartley606 for assistance.
