Scenario: You had a friend in high school who got worse grades than you. Like, way worse. And yet, a few lucky breaks and LOTS of hard work later, they're now an extremely successful entrepreneur. You follow them on LinkedIn, where they regularly post their business figures along with advice on how to achieve the same. You look at your own life and get a little discouraged. What do you do? Do you message them to let them know how you feel? Do you politely ask them to stop posting about their success because of how it makes you feel? No, of course not. And yet, I see a lot of this in the author community. So many posts lately demanding successful authors stop posting their sales numbers and royalty figures. Honestly, that makes no sense to me. I love seeing my peers succeed, especially when they share what steps they took to get there. What better way to learn than to study the tools that have worked for others? I will give one caveat though: Why in the hell do you all keep calling these "transparency posts"? You're not a charity. And we're not the taxman. I can't begin to express how weird and "fake humble" the word "transparency" sounds in this context. And I say this as someone who loves these posts, finds them extremely useful, and knows you're all trying to be helpful (and you are!). But can we please, please, please change the name? 😅
