Today was a monumental day in the history of Spruce Pine, North Carolina. After almost a year of blood, sweat and tears, DT’s Blue Ridge Java (the heart and soul of Spruce Pine) has officially reopened, almost 11 months to the day after Hurricane Helene left Western North Carolina in ruins. It’s been a long road, but the Toe River Valley is coming back better than ever.

WNC UPDATE: I spoke with mom yesterday. She is getting new appliances delivered next Friday. For the first time in her adult life she did not cook Thanksgiving dinner. She left the #SprucePine #NC and went to Hickory. My nieces took care of it. Thank you Samantha and Lizzie🦃🫶🏽I love you both so much and I am proud of you! Also, mom is getting an HVAC unit in 2.5 weeks. She will no longer be cold. The house is going to take a long time to be repaired/rebuilt. The damage is extreme and there is a long line for contractors, sub contractors and materials. @StateFarm is working with mom to ensure her house is back to the way it was before this historic storm.

My eyes didn’t deceive me when I visited my parents in Burnsville/Spruce Pine, NC back in Oct. I saw washed away home after home after home. They disappeared into thin air. Vanished. Washed away. All but concrete foundation slabs.
I saw a teddy bear in a massive downed tree. A child’s teddy bear was in a tree. Where a home once stood.
The heartbreaking stories in WNC and East TN continue. It’s getting cold now and the holidays are approaching. If you can help, please do. 🩷

UPDATE ON OUR VET IN WHEELCHAIR IN #SprucePine #NC
Disaster Recovery Baptist Mission came and did the tear out of the lower level of vet’s home. All flooring, and about 12" of sheet rock, insulation and mold remediation has been done. USAA insurance denied the claim. We are not sure if the adjuster used was actually licensed in NC (by law.)
We are trying to find a NC licensed contractor/s to provide quotes for home repairs so vet may live comfortably in the home he bought. Adjuster sent by USAA overlooked many things (deck on back of home, roof, windows, screens, gutters) and the report is difficult to understand. USAA denial is clear. Denied.
So we need estimates in order to go back to USAA and force them to revisit denial.
Also working with Department of Insurance and Mike Causey's office.
