Hate Crimes Against Jehovah’s Witnesses in Western Europe When the media spreads false information and the government fuels discrimination and hatred, violence becomes an inevitable outcome. The media manipulates public opinion through stereotypes, ridiculing a particular group and portraying it as a “cult,” harmful, evil, and a hindrance to social harmony. The second stage is discrimination, which involves judicial administration and social control. If a group is persistently depicted as a threat to society, then judicial persecution against that group seems “reasonable” or even “necessary.” The third stage is violence. If discrimination and oppression fail to silence the people perceived as dangerous, then individuals who feel justified in their actions under the influence of the public atmosphere and government’s incitement may provoke more extreme measures, such as deliberately causing trouble against the labeled persons, insulting the target, lynching, illegal detention, assaulting, or resorting to other radical violence.
