Found these old seedlings growing in small pots, so up-potted them and the roots look really strong Unfortunately the labels have faded I believe they are all #tacsonia and one of them maybe P.#pennipes due to having #pinnate #stipules #passiflora

@Scott_Zona Thanks for the botanical lesson, Scott! These are also red #stipules of Magnolia grandiflora 'Kay Parris'. The Dutch word is 'schutblad', which means protection leave.

A bit more on physical #PlantDefenses: beyond #prickles from hairs & #thorns from branches, many plants evolved #spines from leaves or leaf-associated structures. Dramatic example here in #Pachypodium: Left & right slanted spines from #stipules; center from axillary leaf bud(?).
